Commuting times

    Hi there,

Can anyone tell me how long it might take me to commute from Blackrock to Santry every day?

I've been asked to do some work in Santry - am keen on the job however the commute might be a killer - and I have two small children who I would like to see regularly.

I don't wish to turn down work however I do want to be able to see my children.

Would it make a major difference if I worked from 8 - 4?

    thanks

how long does it take to get to the m50 from blackrock?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 215 ✭✭Ellechim

from where I live it can be 10 mins if there's no traffic or 45 if there is - I did the journey last Friday, left home at 10am and got there in 35 mins. However, that is out of normal work times - I'd like to know what it's like on a 'normal' Monday to Friday.........

I occasionally go from Harolds Cross down to Dun Laoghaire for 9am and that will take around an hour. If you're contending with the M50 you're probably looking at an hour and a half at least, maybe more.

    Hi Ellechim

Why dont you do a 'dummy run' some morning ie get up and leave the house at whatever time you would be planning to leave the house at if you got the job- 7am or 7.30am. (though this may depend on whether you are working at the moment)

    ^Thats a good idea.

Also could public transport be an option? DART/Train to Drumcondra and then there's a few buses running from there to Santry.

Yes, there are quite a few buses that go through Drumcondra to Santry regularly. And from Drumcondra to Santry there is a bus lane almost all the way. (except that little bit at The Cat n Cage).

The 16 could be of service?

Get the Dart to |Drumcondra, and then 16 to Santry

(this is all depending on where in blackrock/santry your going)

41, 41C, 33 would be quicker as they don't go around Beaumont. They go straight from Whitehall through Santry Village.

    Thanks everyone.

I will try the commute in rush hour but can't until next week - I wanted to kick off interview process asap beforehand.

Darting and bussing would be at least an hour all told regardless of the hour of day.

Driving could be 45 mins if I work 8-4.

So I'm off to try to negotiate those work hours (in addition to stonking salary and occasional working from home, ha!)

The thing is, the guy that would be my boss, I've worked with him before and he is fantastic, would be great to work for him again.

If this job was close to home I would be lying across their reception desk.

All this excitement and I don't even know the salary. Here's hoping.......

Get the Dart to |Drumcondra, and then 16 to Santry

(this is all depending on where in blackrock/santry your going)

You would have to get a Dart to Pearse/Conolly and the a train to Drumcondra

it depends on the day mondays and friday's are usually a lot better on the m50 and tue seems to be the worst and wed/thur a mixture of both

if it takes you 10 mins to get to the m50 i'd say you would be averaging about 30-40 mins to santry so it's not too bad

definitely go for the 8 to 4 times if you can. Or go for even earlier if that is possible. A 7am start would make a massive difference. This drive will take 45mins to an hour on a very good day and up to 2 hours or even more on a bad one if going for 9am imo.

I used to do a similar route in reverse and found that eastlink was quicker. If you can afford the port tunnel even better. No matter what you do you are going to have some very bad days of traffic as it is a longish commute but it should be ok if you can agree out of hours times and stick to them.

Public transport/cycling may be your best option depending on exactly where you are going from/too. Eg leaving a cheap bike in Killester and getting dart to there and back and cycling the rest.

That is interesting - Eastlink quicker - this job is before the port tunnel btw.

To be honest I wouldn't normally consider working so far from home but with the economy the way it is I can't afford to look a gift horse in the mouth.......

When you say 'before the port tunnel', it must be just near the exit if it is in Santry? Are we talking in the industrial estate near JMSE? May still be quicker using it then coming back on yourself a bit.

Killester is then likely only 1.5miles or so away. May be a good option.

I do wicklow town to kinsealy in 1 hour. Since the toll bridge has gone its a dream the longest its taken me has been 1:10min. Blackrock to Santry would be grand, 50 min at the most, getting up to the m50 would be the issue.

Oh east link and up the malahide road would take you about 35 mins against traffic.

good point, all my time on m50 was in the toll bridge days, that must be an early start to do it that quickly though?

Ellechim, take the DART to Connolly Station and walk around the corner to Abbey St. The 33 & 41 buses termini are there and they go to Santry, so you'll pretty much hop on the bus when you get there. I'm guessing the trip should take 20-25 mins by DART and 40-45 mins by bus.

Ironically enough, I might be working in Blackrock soon, yet live in Santry.

    Want to swap. LOL. :)

I would agree with all the above.

The earlier you go the easier it will be. I've a different journey across the city. But my 30/40 minute commute can be 90mins if I leave at the wrong time. I can cycle it in 45~55 mins. The train takes about 70 mins and the bus forever. I get to work too early but its worth it. If I cycle it doesn't matter what time I leave, as traffic is a non issue. Its the most consistent timewise too.
