I have just seen on Sky News that Kevin Pietersen has resigned as England captain following the bust up with Peter Moores. That is a major shock. All the talk up until now has been of Moores getting the boot, but apparently not!

Didnt see this coming if true.

I thought Moores was a gonner for sure.

Yeah, I would have thought that tool Peiterson would have continued to get everything handed to him & Moores would have got the punt.

Moores has resigned too! This is getting messy.

I wonder if there is a Vaughan/Trescothick story going to come out soon... :D

Anything that helps Australia retain the ashes is good news.

They need all the help they can get:)

its all to do with sleection policy.

why do they need a board of selectors including a captain and coach...why not have a football type manager who picks the team.

Don't think its "resign", more "fired by committee". So says Aggers.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/cricket/england/7815038.stm
BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew said he had been told by an ECB spokesman that Pietersen and Moores had not tendered their resignations.

He told Radio 5 Live: "The ECB confirmed to me that no resignations have been offered or accepted.

"Further board meetings have taken place following the one last night, which I understand concluded with the agreement that both Pietersen and Moores would be sacked.

"Andrew Strauss is likely to be named as Pietersen's successor."

6pm ECB news conference to clear up what happened.

What are the chances of Pietersen never playing test cricket again?

Hmm pretty low it turns out. He fully intends to tour the West Indies. Whether he will or not is another matter, but he clearly has no intention on turning his back on England over this debacle.

I didnt like all the rubbish the media (sky sports news/setanta sports news) were spouting about the possibility of him never playing test cricket again. He's dedicated to the English team and even if you doubt that commitment, he wouldn't abandon his chances of making a serious overall impact in test and ODI cricket because he happened to clash with a certain coach.

He's been playing test cricket for around three and a half years now and has amassed over 4000 test runs at an average of over 50. Considering he is only 28, he has at least another 7 years left in his international career. He has the chance to become one of the all time great batsmen, I dont think he would let a conflict like this affect those chances.

The impression I get from the man is that he has a thirst for runs and would rue missing out on the 300+ that the West Indies tour could potentially afford him. Plus, hes representing his country!!! ;-)

so why or what exactly made the ECB drop Pieterson as captain

i understand sacking Moores, they`ve been average at best since Fletcher got the boot,

i wonder who they`ll get now, werent they after one of the Chappells, but he`s since gone to Sri Lanka,

    hmm, this will be interesting
