iPod Touch charging question

I got an ipod touch for Christmas and I really do love it. Except for one thing. I have an ipod mains charger I got when I bought my first ipod a few years ago. I've had two ipods since I got the one that came with the mains charger and it's worked with all of them (my last ipod was a 30G video one). I tried charging the ipod touch with it and although the connection fits fine a message came up saying "this accessory does not support charging" and it just didn't charge. Now, to me that seems a bit stupid. If I'm on hols I have to take my laptop just to charge my ipod.

A friend suggested I try another generic kind of USB charger. Did anyone else have this problem? Has anyone else charged their ipod without using their laptop/pc.

It seems a bit stupid to me. It's much less portable then other ipods if you need a computer to charge it.

I have a plug in mains charger for mine? Have taken it to the US, Eqypt etc... no problems!

Perhaps yours is older and not compatable?

hmm, maybe. My charger does look a lot chunkier than the one in the picture and it is a good few years old. It's just weird that it said it didn't support charging. The ipod recognised I was trying to charge it but wouldn't let me.

I hope the ipod is not dodgy :(

Unfortunately eBay is not big in New Zealand and the delivery charges are usually mad (and I've had things go missing on the way here before) so I'll have to look elsewhere for one that works!

EDIT: Had a look at the NZ eBay equivalant and a lot of the chargers advertised say not compatible with ipod touch so maybe it does need a special newer one. Better go on a hunt for one - maybe it's best to go to the apple shop.

Your ipod is most likely fine....apple altered/removed something from the new touch that made it incompatible with the majority of currently available ipod accessories that provided a charge.

I charge mine using an apple usb-AC adapter I bought in '05/'06 and it charges fine, so if that is the one you have then maybe you do have a problem after all

Same as myself had an old ipod charger that isn't compatible with the touch and the same with an ipod dock that I bought last year, don't worry its not a hardware fault they changed the adaptors the feckers.

The reason it doesn't work is as follow (I think):

WHy apple started making iPods they were Firewire only. Then, they could be synched (and, of course charged) via Firewire and USB. Later models couldn't be synched via Firewire, but still could be charged that way. The iPod Touch does not support Firewire full stop.

The reason this affects you is that your charger charges using the Firewire charging mechanism. More modern chargers should support USB charging. (this distinction between charging mechanisms is true even though your charger does not contain any standard firewire or USB connectors)
