Hey there, I'm looking to get my hands on a 4 track portastudio like teh Tascam 414 or something but I can't seem to find them anywhere. I presume they have been discontinued but surely they can be got? Anybody know where I might look? Theres just one on ebay at the moment...

Keep watching ebay, I'd say. It's hard to get your hands on audio cassettes now, and with the cheap and cheerful digital multitrackers there is little call for the old ones? Any particular reason you need the cassette based one?

The one valid reason I can think of is that you might have old 4 track cassettes?

There is a Tascam 4-track on Adverts by a seller called Morning Hush.
I thought about buying it myself...

Still curious why one would want one. For an authentic old sound?

I don't know exactly why I want one to be honest, I've always been fascinated with them. I've always used computers to record and I think tape would just force you to think totally different. I think of how many songs I have from bands that recorded to 4-track, albums that were actually released after being recorded on a 4-track, I just think they are a great creative tool really. Also I think my playing might get better if I'm not looking at the audio on a screen, just concentrating on using my ears.

well make me an offer then, but do it on the ad lest the mods get miffed.

In my experience 4-tracks were hissy pieces of cr**. You'd get better results recording to 128Kbs mp3. Some of the SD based digital multi-trackers are cheap and work much like 4 tracks, and you have the option of transferring digitally to a DAW if you want to. I'm all for a Zen setup but I would only use a 4-track tape machine as a notebook for capturing ideas.

i happened to speak briefly with a guy last night who picked up a 4 track for free by talking to some of his local music equipment shops and getting one that had been handed in as part of a WEE recycling deal on a new digital recorder. I've no other details but maybe it's worth a ring around if you can grab a freebie
