Tax Relief

Okay first off I am totally clueless when it comes to tax.

I applied for and was granted tax relief for tuition fees that I paid for in September. The sum was €408 and I was mailed out a tax certificate confirming that the tax credits will be applied in 2009.

I told the accountants in work and they said that revenue will send them out a seperate tax credit certificate but I have heard nothing since then. I will ask them again this week but I was wonder how the tax credits will effect my salary? Will the €408 be deducted off my salary over the next couple of months or something similar to that?

If you paid them in Sept 08 then you should get the relief for the same year. Relief is only granted in the year that the fees were paid. Depending on when you applied, the relief will the granted in one of two ways - cheque or implemented through your tax credits. As it is now 2009, the relief should now be granted as a refund by cheque as relief for previous years can only be given as a refund.

If you paid the fees in 2009, then relief would be granted through your tax credits - it is applied by breaking down the amount of 408 into 52 weeks. This works out at approx €7.85, which means each week you will get an extra €7.85 a week in your wages. This also depends on whether your income is already subjected to tax...if your income is too low and you are not paying any tax then there will be no relief as it is Tax Relief on tuition fees. The same applies for last year.

When you submitted your claim, did you give bank account details for the refund in 08?
Are you still doing the course and due to pay fees for this year as well? If you are not paying fees for this year then you should not be receiving the relief through your wages - I would check that with them, you dont want to have to repay them 408 in 2010!

Any questions let me know :)

Thanks for the very detailed and helpful reply :)

I got a tax credit certificate at the start of December after submitting the tax relief form to revenue along with a receipt for my tuition fees at the start of November, but there was never an option to submit bank details or anything like that (I did that with my rent relief though and they paid that straight into my bank account).

I am still doing the course and I will have to pay another set of fees in September of this year. How would I go about getting a cheque for €408 from revenue? Surely they should have sent it out before Christmas? The €7.85 per week would suck as I am totally skint right now and I need a bulk sum to tide me over until payday.

If you received the Tax credit certificate in December, that means that your employer would have received the employers copy at the same time which in turn means that your employer should have refunded the amount through your wages in the next paycheck from when they received it.
Did you notice a difference in your wages in December?
What you need to do is check your payslips for December and see if there is a minus figure in your PAYE column. If there isnt, you then need to check with your employer if they got the updated P2C or TDC for you in December. If they did ask them did they issue the refund etc..
If they didn't receive the P2C or TDC you then need to contact revenue, however you will need your P60 details for last year otherwise they will not be able to update you as to where your refund is.
Keep in mind that if you didn't pay any tax last year then there is no refund due.

    Keep the questions coming! :)

I got €500 bonus for Christmas (€250 of which were given to me in vouchers) so €250 was added onto my wage for December and I got taxed on that too so in other words; no I didn't notice any increase in my wages unfortunately.

The thing is I was on a "forced sabbatical" for 6 months last year so I have only paid tax for the last six months of 2008, will this make a big difference? I mean I am paying tax now and I had to stump up €2,260 for a year of college night course that is related to my job so I can't really see it making that much of a difference.

I'll get onto revenue and see what they say anyway and check again with payroll to see if my P2C or TDC has arrived yet.

If you paid tax in the latter half of 2008 then that tax is there to be able to provide relief on your tuition fees.
Get you last payslip for last year i.e week 52 and contact revenue. They will ask you a few details on it and then should be able to give you more information OR ask your employer about the P2C or TDC.
You should get some resolution to your query then.
If you have more questions let me know :)

I was just talking to the account (he was on holiday and I was doing exams) and he said I won’t get my tax back in my next payment and when I get my P60 I will have to claim the 2008 tax back.

I really feel like I am being fobbed off here

S/he is correct. You cannot get the refund back through your wages this year as you paid your fees last year therefore the refund has to come from revenue in the form of a cheque.
However your employer should have received a copy of your tax credit certificate last year when you applied for the relief and it was then and only then that your employer should have refunded the amount to you.
If that did not happen you need to sumit your p60 to revenue and ask for a review of 2008. If your employer did not give you the refund in your wages last year, revenue will issue the refund then.
As i posted previously, if you do not have your p60 yet, find your last payslip and contact revenue. Say you have your pay and tax details for last year and you are wondering if you overpaid tax- they should be able to calculate it for you there and then, but they may not and they will ask you to submit in. Give it a go.
The only way this will be resolved is if you sumit in either your p60 or ring with your final payslip.
Depending on your geographical area, check the revenue website for the 1890 number you need to ring.
    Good Luck! :)

Apply to your local tax office with details of the type of relief you are looking for. I.e if it is relief on Permanent health insurance, send in the certificates with the figures etc and submit this with a covering letter. :)

I've already downloaded, filled out and submitted the correct tax form along with the receipt from my college course to revenue and they sent me (and I presume my employer) my current updated tax certificate.

This was back in December and I asked my employer if they received it and they said they hadn't. But after a month of hounding them I discovered that they did infact receive it and now they are telling me that I need to go through the whole submitting form process again  Are they taking the piss? It seems like they are doing their best not to reimburse me my €408 tax refund even though I paid for the course out of my own pocket after they refused to pay a cent for it (tight bastards!).

I'll call revenue tomorrow and see will they send out my P60. I have my last payslip of 2008 so hopefully it shouldn't be a problem (at least I hope it won't be).

Revenue doesn't issue P60's. Your employer does.
Your employer will not be reinbursing you the 408 euros, revenue will as it applies to last year. :)

All relief on health insurance is at source (akin to TRS on mortgage payments). The amount that you actually paid for the health insurance reflects the amount less the relief.

This does not apply to permanent Health insurance.
Permanent Health insurance is where a person pays a premium on a policy to secure the continuance of income and payment of benefits during disablement through accident, injury or sickness. Once its approved by Revenue as a Permanent Health Benefit Scheme relief is granted.
If claiming for past years the relief will have to be claimed directly from Revenue. :)
