I know that this thread has probably come up before, but could you recommend
firstly a good external hard drive - one which doesnt need an external power source , and also a good reliable internal laptop hard drive for an inspirion 6000 please.

    Thanks in advance

External : WD Passport take your pick from http://www.komplett.ie/k/kl.aspx?bn=10098

I think the Inspiron 6000 is IDE so take your pick from http://www.komplett.ie/k/kl.aspx?bn=10094

Your budget will dictate the capacity but try and get a 7200rpm drive for the internal as you will see a real difference over a 4200 or 5400. It doesn't matter for external as you'll be limited to the speed of the USB interface.

what about this one.. for external?

For the internal drives there are no 7200 rpm's available on the komplett website. Also which brand would you think is best? Western digital , samsung or another one?

I have 4 samsung spinpoints in my desktop (2 x 500gig, 2 x 1tb). Really good performers and very cheap for the space you get. I'm sure the same can be said if they also manufacture the laptop equivalent drives.

I got my Mrs a Freecom Mobile Drive XXS 3 320gig hard drive for christmas. It's really small and doesn't require it's own power supply as it powers off the USB. Seems to do the trick. If you want a bigger drive then you'll need to get one with an external power supply. The mybook ones are pretty good and come in crazy sizes > 1tb. Although my last one fell off my desk which has rendered it useless. The Freecom one is covered in a rubbery plastic so I would imagine is more resilient to accidents.

    Cheers,
    TC
