im helping my friend to get rid of around 25 viruses etc on her laptop
from spyware, trojans and dialer etc etc

she has anti virus 2009 but it will cost her like 50 euro to register

so im hoping to put on avast on to the laptop

so what should i do first

    i was thinking like this

    delete =anti virus

install avast and let it delete the viruses

    would that work?

i went to a computer shop and i quoted a price of 95 euro to fix it wow

anti virus 2009 is a virus and spyware.

Its not that easy to remove not sure what free products will do, maybe try AVG

Go to "Control Panel" and then into "Windows Firewall", make sure it's on and you have your firewall.;)

What anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc... do you have installed on the computer?

ya thanks mate for the advice

iv avast and zone-alarm on the computer

    so im pretty much covered

never ever seen anything like that anti-virus 2009 virus before wow

Its creates a spoof popup and once you click you are inviting the install so zonealarm or any firewall will not prevent it

I'd give a few other programs a try to make sure the laptop is completely cleared, I'd recommend Malware Bytes and Super Anti-Spyware, they seem to pick up alot more stuff than other programs.;)

indeed. no single product has 100% detection rate, so it's best to have a number on your machine (although only have one active at any time, or else they can conflict).

Ad-aware Free is another one to add to that list. I don't think it's as good as it used be, but still in the past has removed stuff on my machine where none of the other scanners would.

Try some of the online scanners as well from Kaspersky and Panda from time to time, to supplement Avast. They won't remove much for you, but at least they can help identify it if you still have a problem.

and dare i say it, McAfee has picked up things in the past as well where AntiVir and AVG weren't able to. I like to download the trial now and again and run it for a day or two.

Thought that was only with AV's?
    Ad-aware Free

I'd actually recommend against Ad-aware, been nothing but a pain for me.

malwarebytes detected some nasty stuff for me on my desktop here, got rid of a nasty virus i got where it would crash my antivirus when id try and scan, it took over my broswers and wudnt allow me to search for anything with anti-virus in the tittle and the likes... it was nasty, avg and malwarebytes cleaned it up nice,

The question i have is, Is windows firewall and windows defender worth it? are they actually usefull or is it better to have an 3rd paty products?

ive used last years avg and was content... same with malwarebytes but i got a new laptop now, and mcaffe is anoying me on it to register dont particularly want to, its just wasting ram with its notifications, Can i just simple uninstall it from the usual programs removal menu or is it there more to it than that?... just thought id ask here isntead of a new thread

anything with a deep scanner. I was lazy one evening and decided to run malwarebytes and superantispyware at the same time to see what would happen. crashed the PC about a half an hour later :D

I always run AVG, Malware Bytes and Super Ani-Spyware with no problems bar my computer being a bit slower.

No bother with it scanning and finding stuff, just used to freeze alot, etc... and when I tried getting rid of it off my computer it didn't completely go afaik, I know there's see a desktop icon which can't be deleted.
