Insurance

Just tought I'd share this with you for anyone interested.

Dropped my 70-200 2.8 a while ago ( I blame Martin Parr !) and sent it off to Canon UK, bypassing ISS, which proved a wise move.

Anyway, it was kaputt and being expensive the insurance kicked in. I was a wee bit apprehensive as it's insured on the house. It didn't cost anything extra :D and the limit is €1500 per item, which was grand for me. However, I didn't specify items individually and was a bit apprehensive and having bought it second hand had no receipt. Add to that I dropped it myself.

To cut a long story short they required a statement from Canon saying it was banjaxed and a copy of the RRP (yes even more expensive than Conn's) and paid out in days and the excess was only €35. Canon offered me a replacement at a good price and then upgraded it to the IS version for free.

All in all a very pleasant experience and a world away from the two experiences of my house being robbed in the 90's.

Insurer is Hibernian. It's world wide all risks and insured as an amateuer, which I am.

    T.

Why claim hammers cost very little!

I have to get public liability insurance as it's a requirement of a venue I need to shoot in.

Not only that but I have heard on the grapevine that some of the sporting organisations will be taking this route in order for media to gain access to their events.

Seems it's already in place for the news and photo agencies and is trickling down to the freelancers.

Had a few quotes and am looking at between €300 and €400 per anuum for 2m cover.

What's that about? In case you swing around and clock someone with your 300mm, or some such event?

I would say it is that very reason!

Most events I've signed up to require you to have public liability insurance to the value of €500,000 minimum.

    More or less.

I think you may need to get it soon if what I've heard is correct ;)

Bah, there was nothing mentioned about that sort of stuff in the email they sent out today - I'll apply quick. ;)

EDIT: I thought I was going mad there for a minute - name change!

Myself and Paulw use PhotoShield. Costs me €390 for the year.

€10k worth of gear covered. €2.1 million public liability. All risks. Includes 45 days out of Ireland.

    Many more extra's.

PM if you want more details.

That's who I went with in the end, costing €510.

Two other (Irish) quotes were off the radar as far as I was concerned.

The kit (It was declared as pro equipment) had been covered 'all risks' on my home policy but had no public liability.

A PL policy alone in Ireland would have cost more than Photo Shield so the deal is not bad.

Steve at Photo Shield is great. (say you were referred by me, please). The prices are very very competitive, especially for what they offer and cover.

More and more sporting clubs/venues are requiring you to have public liability. It protects them as much as you.

Imagine the disaster if a high profile sporting player broke a leg on your camera gear, and the claim there. Or some fan trips on your gear and is hurt.

As they say, always use protection. :D

My insurance is due for renewal next month. It's a necessary cost, and I hope I never need to use it. Mind you, for a good price, I get to insure my gear and my girlfriend's, for all risks, worldwide (for 45 days per year), with 2million public liability, and over 25k of gear (inc laptop, etc).

The Irish prices I was quoted from 2 insurance brokers was almost double the cost through Photo Shield.

Do photoshield over protection of equipment to non-pros

In a rented house. Tried to get rented house insurance last year. Its complicated with multiple flatmates but will prob have my own (rented) place soon enough but if I could just insure my gear that would be good

    I'm a non-pro. :D

They will certainly quote you for your camera gear. No harm just contacting them and asking.
