Genetics - how do they affect your life?

Springing from the TV forum on a programme about Irish bloodlines, I was looking to discuss in more detail what people's views are on genetics and how your genetic code may affect your life?

For example, I've never been too interested in having children, don't have a strong maternal instinct. Could this be explained on a baser level by me being predisposed to destroy my genetic heritage? This would go against gene theory in general, but perhaps I have a defective gene that would be passed on to any children I may bear, hence my genes have manufactured a brain response to ensure I do not procreate.

Do you have any character traits you have wondered may be more nature, than nurture?

Anyway, I'm interested in this topic, but wasn't sure where to post it, so Mods, please advise or move where necessary (although perhaps not AH...).

Ya i always found it fascinating. I have relations to Ned Kelly "the outlaw". I have been told im fairly argumentative. Would love to know what my genetic make up was, as in what part of Europe my ancestors came out of. Blonde hair, Blue Eyes and Dark Skin.

Yeah, I'd love to know my genetic heritage. I think someone posted up a link to the guys that did the testing, but it's €200.

It makes you think about how un-individual we all really are. I know everyone goes on about how we're all unique, but we're not really, more of a sum of the best bits from all of our relatives.

I dunno about that. I think you are defined more by your actions by people who's opinions you actually care about. Thats what makes a person unique.

I'm the sum-total of my ancestors
    I carry their DNA
We are representatives of a long line of people
And we carried them around either with
    This long line of people
That goes back to the beginning of time
And when we meet - they meet other lines of people
And we say bring together the lines of men.

Its actually miraculous we are here at all when you think about it.
