Copy of a e-mail I received this morning.
Some people just won't take no for an answer and expect others to waste their time and money on their behalf
I have no objection to calling round and checking possibilities , but FREE??

Message: I have had 2 companies at my house to
    > look at the free to air system, but
    > both have said there is no signal, due
    > to tall trees at the back of the house.
    > Is there a way of overcoming this ?
    > Would you do a free callout to the
    > house ?

I had a guy call to my house at 9.15 am on Christmas morning wanting me to do a service call!!!
These people wouldn't call their doctor for fear of cost.
Bit of a cheek being an understatement!!!!!

Just before xmas a customer rings me to tell me he has moved to a 4th floor apartment and when i explain the difficulties of the installation situation to him he then asks will I store his dish for him! I've also gotten requests for free advice on fitting dishes bough from B and Q. It wears you out at times.

You think you pros have it hard???? Jaysus, try doing it as a favour for a friend and then see what happens!!!

In my other life as an IT Genius, people think nothing of calling me at all hours of the day or night for free advice and then have the audacity to complain when:

    A: They don't like it.
B: They don't follow it and the problem persists.
C: Its too expensive a solution.

Hmmm... I don't know why I bother sometimes. Perhaps, unlike Jim Carey, I should learn to say No!

Another classic was " I bought a dish in Lidl and live in Carlow, can you tell me if the dish goes on the front or the back of the house"

Surely they could just fit the dish where it looks best and then realign the house?

The funniest one I have had was along the lines of "Oh, I didn't realise that you had to put a dish on my wall....."

Ummmm... so ehhh where did you think the box connected to then???

I get asked all the time " does a satellite box need a satellite dish?"

The wall plate RTE/Chorus/Westward/Builder/NTL/UPC/Casey installed of course. It's Magic!

By same token I'm prepared to believe some Dogybox misusers really don't realise they are stealing a service. It's not like someone comes and reads a meter :)

I know how you feel, bit like all the viruses but naturally they did nothing except download all the crap from limewire riddled with stuff!!

Try installing for people (friends) and then complaining about having to rescan for channels etc!!
Bet ye lads get sick of people asking for RTE free on satellite!!!

The might Lidl box has gotten me phone calls at midnight looking for frequencys for the c4 channels. These people have the internet and have given the the links but you always get "I don't understand that!". I now tell them get $ky box and an english ftv card and they'll be fine. It takes the a long time to figure out how to get one lol.

This reminds me of my days doing tv / video servicing. Classics such as:

"It wont cost much to fix its just the switch"

    "Do you do free estimates"

"£50!!! eh.....eh.... tell you what i'll get a new one in power city sure cant you sell it on yourself?"

At one point I had two garden sheds full of gear that customers never collected having given false contact details. £10 cash deposit soon sorted out the messers but they still tried it on.

    "Left my wallet at home"
"No cash on me will you take a cheque"

I currently have a fella looking for me to pay a €200 repair bill on a LCD Tv that died when I was there. Tv was working when I went in to sort the aerials.
Went to turn it on at end of job , dead. Reckons it must be my fault. Threatening small claims court too!
Sad thing is if he takes it there they would probaly give it to him too.
They always tend to side with the consumer.

I know NOTHING about computers, Linux, Windows, Transmitters, TVs and Satellite gear. But phone me if you are giving away free money :)

If you have a friend that is incompetant with a PC the quickest way to lose the friendship is start fixing it.

Did a lidl install for a guy all we were asked to do was put the dish up, afterwards he said he's not paying because he's not getting the four irish stations on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 685 ✭✭✭jackbauer

my response to that would be " ok no problem i'll take it back down"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,249 ✭✭✭kbell

"I no pay" was the repeated answer i got from a customer once who's dish i was asked to realign, when i asked for what i was owed.
(previous to this she spoke perfect English)

Fine i said, and i went back out, up my ladder and yanked hard on the arm of the dish leaving it pointing about 45deg towards her garden.:pac:

We don't do any installation on any Lidi, B+Q etc sat equipment, customers think that then can ring you up morning, evening and night, and it's your fault that the rx is faulty.
They buy cheap equipment, and then want cheap installations, :D:D

You pay for what you get.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,341 ✭✭✭✭Tony

Agreed, stop doing those years ago because of that. Only ones i do now are Freesat boxes although I do explain the warranty implications to customer before taking on the job.

When I've done installations for people with Lidl, B+Q.. equipment, i use my own cable, f's and wall bracket.
I tell them that what they've bought is rubbish and I'll only warranty what i've supplied. ie no dish and reciever!!

@ Tony... ha ha, i didn't stick around to find out.
As i was packing up my gear, she was on the phone shouting and ranting, and it sounded like she was calling in re-enforcements.
I made my exit quick smart!!

I carry a bucket of invisible paint with me to every install to paint the cable just to keep the customers happy.
Also i got a call from a guy who i installed a dish 3 months earlier telling me his Calving cameras have not worked since i was at his tv. My response to him was Yeah Right.!!

Heh, I've nearly experienced all those issues!

It can get even more annoying when it comes to aerial installs, especially where something like a masthead amp would fail. In areas I'd know for having poor to average Brougher reception, I'd always ask "what was your pictures like?" and it's surprising how many would reply with "they were perfect" even though you know they're fibbing a bit.

One time, a fella was asking my opinion on the Lidl system that was on offer at the time (the one with teh superflimsy 80cm dish), and I told him what I thought of it (which wasn't much). Anyway, he ignored my advice about how flimsy it was and went ahead and bought it, and had a "friend" put it in for him. Was chatting to him some weeks later, and he told me all this pushing the fact that his Lidl receiver and dish was a great job and bargain compared to the Triax dish and TM receiver that I was selling for more.
Anywho, come the stormy weather some months ago, and he was back with his tail well between his legs! :D Alas, the reflector blew away, leaving the plastic bracketry.

Then you charge a good wak, for a new Triax65cm, and a proper installation :

    Happy days : :D:D:D
