I have a small scrape which needs fixing on my VW Golf and I need to buy a can of spray paint for the job. I believe that there is a plate somewhere on the car which tell you the colour code of the car to that I can buy the right paint. Does anyone know where this is in a golf or is there any other way of finding the colour code

when you open one of the front doors the plate i think is located around near the door seals somewhere.

    it will be quite noticable

Look in the boot, under the spare wheel. There should be a sticker in the wheel well. There'll be a code in there (something like LK2Y).

An identical copy of this sticker can also be found attached to the inside of cover of the service schedule in the owners handbook folder.
