New Bike

    Hi All,

Sorry in advance for asking a 'which bike' question, i know you get this all the time, but i am well confused when looking to try and find the bike i need, there is so much choice and variety it is unreal.

I am a new cycling enthusiast who will be looking for a bike for mostly 20km rides on weekends and once or twice a week, possibly just heading off road from time to time on local treks etc. My budget is approx €350. Does weight and height come into play when ordering online as i see all the different size bikes etc. I am 5'11 and weigh approx 14stone.

Could anyone suggest a bike that may suit my needs. Any advice would be much appreciated!

is it defo worth ordering online now with sterling rates or can you pick up something decent in Halfords. I saw the other day that they have a sale on in their in Cork but the choice was overwhelming. Any good brands at that money in Halfords? or should i stick to wiggle and chainreaction?

    Thanks in advance.

Just over your budget at 425 or so, but the BeOne Storm 2.0 is cracking value for money.

Cheaper, and still pretty good is the Briza 2.0 at 285ish... you ays your money and takes your choice -but be sure to budget for all the extras too (helmet if you wear one, shorts, jerseys, gloves etc)

Thanks for the advice and for taking the time to reply Tinyexpolsions, much appreciated. Are those 2 bikes ok for going off road on local wooded treks or are these specifically road?

They are really road bikes (I'm sorry, I didn't read the off-road part!). For going onto trails, the best compromise is a cyclo-cross (sometimes just cross) bike, but these are quite a bit more expensive (about 700 quid)

It depends how off-road you think you want to go. If it's just rolling, fairly smooth trails than the cross bike Tiny suggested would be a great compromise. If you'd prefer a bit of cross country (XC) then a hardtail MTB would be better. Maybe check out cross bike and XC races on Youtube to get an idea of the difference in terrain?

Would also recommend checking out your LBS if your not sure of size and fitting.

My cousin is involved with the new cycling store near the long mile road ,beside the Bike shop (motor bike) ,PM me and I'll send ya on his No. they've just got the new range of GT's in ,maybe a little ouuta your price league (as his is €4800 :D) but they've loads of other ranges in and hes done great deals for all my friends who range from the commuter to the guys who do the Trans Alp challenge. ;)

Have a think and be honest with yourself: how much off road are you actually likely to do? Maybe you will do loads and this will be your introduction, but make sure it's something you want to do, otherwise you will regret wasting the money when all you wanted was something for the road.

    best of luck
