UPC DVR & Vista MCE

I'm tearing my hair out trying to get a UPC DVR (I believe it's a Thomson 6000 box) talk nicely to Vista Media Center.

The problem I'm having is that the remote is not correctly passing entries to the UPC box, it's either dropping or duplicating digits. I've been trying various combinations of values from here
http://mediacenterguides.org/node/7 (see "IR delays for STB") but have only had partial success.

Has anyone else got this successfully working?

Thanks, yeah I had come across that post searching earlier and it helped at the time.

What seems to have fixed it is to do what the post above says but to cover the IR receiver with my hand when mapping the keys as recommended on another forum, instead of turning the remote away. No I don't understand either why this would help.
