High speed video cameras

Hi there, I'm currently reviewing high-speed video cameras for process analysis in medical device manufacturing.

We've had a supplier demo of one unit which takes 1000fps but has a 2.77 second max recording duration at full resolution. This increases somewhat based on additional flash memory, reduced resolution and reduced frame rate.

We've also borrowed an older unit which has a max frame rate of 50fps but records to portable hard drive, allowing several hours of video at max rate and resolution, but the frame rate is too slow to be useful.

What I'm looking for is a 1000fps camera with more than a few seconds of memory. Anyone know where I might find such a beast with a recession-friendly price tag?

1000fps seems very very high, that's a frame every millisecond. No matter how much memory you have you would quickly run out of it, as there would be no time to compress the images so they would have to be stored raw.

    640 * 480 * 3 * 1000 = 921MB/Second (assuming its colour)

Are you trying to inspect a part on a production line? how many parts per minute is the machine doing?

You might be able to sync a strobe onto a camera to make the parts appear stationary...

Does it have to operate in real time? cause there's no way you'll be able to process all them frames in real time...
