Should we demand Rent Decreases?

Just wondering now that the Celtic Tiger and all that lark has arrived surely we shouldnt be expected to be paying the same amount in rent. Anyone think that we should demand a rent drop? I asked bout 3 months ago but was told no way could my landlord afford it (ya right) - should i put some extra pressure on now though obv dont want to be told to get lost either.

Anyone get a rent decrease or looked for one or has rents dropped in general or gotten higher because no one is buying anymore?

are you on a lease? I think everyone should ask for a rent decrease, its clear that almost everyone is paying more than they have to.

Will review the situation at the end of November 09, but for the time being I'm just glad we have the house we do and we're well able to afford it.

Rents are dropping everywhere and the number of house to rent is rising fast. Ask for a decrease and if they wont, just move (when lease is up) to somewhere thats willing to take less money.

    Renters market at the moment.

My cardboard box is soaked through. I flipping well better get a decrease soon!

Nice idea, we have a seriously crooked landlady (no receipts, crappy house, no repairs) and this would be the ideal time to demand a reduction.

yeah guy in the house with me asked for a decrease, its not like they can really afford not to give at least something off... vast majority on variable interest so their repayments will have gone down conciderably

dos,nt mean that they are going to get what their looking for .
i was talking to a guy who said that last year they were paying €1900 a month for a four bed house and he tried it on with their landlord about a decrease in the rent [gave a story that they had found a better deal for €1400 ] they are now still in the same house paying €1450 a month
all one can do is try
greedy feckers have had it too handy too long

The only thing that scares people like this is the revenue commissioners.

Next time she refuses to give a receipt (if you're paying cash) say no bother, you'll call the revenue during the week to ask some questions and btw can I have your name, address and PPS number now also

Tried that too, no backing down. We have copies of all the legal sections ready for her next visit. Scabby biatch came for the rent two days before christmas, one of us doesnt get paid until christmas eve, she asked us to pay for her!

Cant wait to see her face.... It is nice to have leverage.

Im sending it to the PRTB first though, dont want to go the revenue route just yet. As I understand they take care of all that anyway as soon as a complaint is lodged

My friend is renting a large double room in a Cork suburb in a decent house near to everything she needs for 300 a month. That seems to be the cheapest around at the moment (in similar areas) and she is asking for a decrease.

I'm just trying to decide if it's worth my while leaving home now or if I should wait a few months and get cheaper rent.

I got €100 off when I rang my landlord back in November.

If you're using Daft to find a place make sure you have the property bee installed - works with firefox - ,
so you can see the changes the Landlord is making and how long it's been listed.

    Looks like this:

Wait a few months, or make an offer you think is fair.

My friend was about to move out because her mam couldn't afford the rent anymore, and when they told the landlord he decided to lower the rent for them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 106 ✭✭mhairt

Yes. I am paying 600 per month. Asked the landlord to reduce it but he refused to drop it by a cent. Moving out at the end of the month.
    Let the rent revolution begin

    Roffles probably another two weeks?

Its funny how quickly circumstances change, when I was looking for an apartment during the summer the agency knew it was going to be hard for people to find accommodation with the influx of students and wouldn't budge on the price-now it would be someone very very naive (as opposed to just very naive, which was me) who'd accept the price they quoted. And afaik its the same everywhere.

lol my rent hasn't gone up in two years and I seriously doubt it will go up any time soon!

I live in a cold, top floor of a house. 2 beds and a kitchen cum sitting room with space for 2 cars which we both have. All for 1030p.m in D6, 5 minutes from the Luas. Will I be moving anytime soon? No.

my partner and i aren't exactly the most pushy people- but we were looking for a new house here in sligo, and saw the listings were still high (for this area). €600-€650 for a 4 bed semi-d.

without doing any negotiation beyond my boyfriend's beard-scratching, they came down €50 to €550.

on daft it says 'let agreed' for the listing now... but be warned, the prices you see aren't the real prices.

i just wanted to come on boards.ie and give others the heads up. i'm kicking myself that we didn't negotiate further! that's not even a 10% drop, and only amounts to one month's rent over the course of our one year lease. not really a big deal for them :)

i'd say asking for the equivalent of 2 months rent spread over the course of your lease (whatever that amounts to) is worth asking for. look at it this way, if you move they may be looking at an empty flat for at least two months!

    Well said.

Supply has rocketed in the last year and with little demand(a few immigrants have gone home plus recession), the result is that rents come down.

I don't suppose anyone here was agitating for mid lease increases a year or two ago?

Throw in a carrot for the landlord, like you'll refresh your lease for 12 months forward and I'm sure they'll see the sense

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

I managed to whittle my landlady down to 2/3 of my original rent before I was done putting up with her bullsh!t and moved somewhere that was cheaper altogether to begin with. Even if you thikn you are comfortable where you are: look around.

I am moving to a cheaper house as my landlord says he cannot afford a cheaper rent. Cheaper rent or no rent would be his options as he wont get anybody in at the price he is asking for. FAIL.

I was also looking into getting a rent reduction from the landlord. Myself and the gf are paying €1000/pm rent. We have a lease agreement until end of June so obviously the landlord has to desire to reduce the rent. As rent has come down in the last since we began renting 5 months ago we are going to look for a decrease as other, nicer accomodation is now cheaper then our current flat.

The thing putting us off is the rent tax allowance. I have been told that we can claim 20% back on rent paid. That would give us a net rent of €800/pm. If this is the case we'd be happy with the current situation and not have confrontations with the landlord. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!! Cheers!

Eh you only get €400 maximum tax relief per year as a single person or €800 as a couple.

We were in the flat from septmeber last year so that would be 4 months at €200/pm giving a total of €800 for 2008. Would we get this as we are a couple? The full rent was been taken from m account if that makes any difference?

I'm looking at moving myself at the moment and in the last week or so there's been a slight but noticeable increase in prices... odd!

can't wait till move out day, i'm paying thru the roof and my landlord is a 'mare!

Install the 'property bee' toolbar to track the changes in asking prices advertised.
The vast majority are decreasing their asking prices, only a few stingy ones are raising them so shop around!

More fool him then. Most landlords would rather have some shortfall than 100% shortfall.
