Means you receive no support with it, as its designed for system builders who should give support, my advice though is to ignore Norton complately, and try better freeware anti viruses such as Avira or Avast, and if you want a firewall comodo is very good :)

I agree, no need to part with your cash, there are many free and legal antivirus and firewall applications out there and are just as good if not better than a lot of the paid one's.

    +1 for comodo firewall

AVG is a popular free antivirus too, and there is a free version :pac:

those free programs also give free virus definition updates ;-)
    mine updates it self everyday

can anyone answer if the oem will give virus def updates? I know about the free ones

Yes, you will be able to get the virus definitions. However, it is probably not technically legal for you to use an OEM copy. I am not saying you can't buy one, but there is a better than average chance you don't qualify for an OEM copy, because you are probably not an Original Equipment Manufacturer.

You will get updates for a year, what I meant by no support was that if you run into difficulty using the program symantec wont help you! Sorry for this confusion!

I see. I think i was sold one before as it came in a sleeve not a box and was about 20 euro cheaper than other shops. I realised it was oem and called the shop and he said it would work and it did. i also found that when i restored my pc to factory image i got another year of updates

I understand now he should not have sold it to me?
    Sorry for this confusion!
    no problem;)

Technically speaking no he shouldn't have, OEM licenses generally require the software be installed by the system builder and also be sold along with some sort of hardware

Not true? My own lappy shipped with Norton and they gave me a whole shpiel of support. Friendly tech Support guy named Jacob asks to do a remote connection (I let him) so he grabs my mouse and does the troubleshooting, notices i was running norton 07 so he had me upgraded to 08 at the time.

I don't know about Norton, I do know that the versions which are installed on Dells, etc are generally trial versions there for the purpose of expiring soon after your computer purchase and to nag you to buy updates, this is how they make their money, so I'm not suprised they assisted you ;). If you purchase a OEM copy of Windows for example, its under microsofts terms that for any support you refer back to the system builder, read Retail Vs. OEM in this link for more details, they will also come in different packing (Generally a plastic sleeve compared to a proper case), but this wouldnt be the biggest difference, I've used OEM software in the past and still do and never needed support :). Also if a software is faulty or buggy, then of course your entitled to receive support from the company, but for general problems or troubleshooting, you need the retail version

at that stage i was using the purchased license, not the 30-day trial software. I would check to make sure thats a 1-year license by the way OP. Assuming it is I see no reaosn why you wouldnt get support from Norton.
