Which should come first - Dentist or Orthodontist?

I have a quick question, and to get my orthodontist to answer will cost me £80.

I have a lot of dental work to have done. I mean a lot. Root canals and at least 6 or 8 crowns. I have a tooth made of plastic (from my student days) that should some day be turned to porcelain.

I also have a big overbite, which I want to get braces to fix.

Now, my way of thinking is, get the braces first because if I get my crowns, and probably veneers done and my teeth move, it might mess up the whole thing, and I can't even clean my teeth properly with braces (had them before, I know!).

But now that I've made my ortho appointment it's dawned on me that he'll probably say to get all the work done first because my teeth are too weak to put braces on. But I don't want to take a day off, go all the way to Newry and pay £80 to hear what I had a feeling I would hear!

Anyone know which I should do first?
