In a direct debit do you have time to pay money into the account if there is not enough to meet the bill? E.G. bill due today, not enough in account, is there a few days to pay money into it or to receive an eft which will cover the debit? Thanks

It depends how much over your limit you go. Bank of Ireland will generally allow me to go over by about 50 quid and allow the DD to process but you will be hit with a fee and a letter if you exceed your limit.

On the other hand they may refuse the DD and the company may charge you for a refused DD (MBNA have done this to me when I cancelled the DD without telling them first)

I dont know what Bord Gais or the ESB charge. Try their website. I wouldnt be surprised if they didnt charge unlike Credit Card complanies who are a different kettle of fish.

You will prob get a letter saying that it was refused and to pay up quickly.

Thanks I read Bord Gais terms which says the bill is a notification of intent to debit the account or similar wording. In that case I am ok as I will have time -14 days- to ensure there is money in account. Thanks , I should have read BG site first time:o

The bill should arrive 15 days before the due date. If the due date is today, then you've missed the payment. Bord Gais probably won't charge you anything, just as long as you do pay. Your bank however, will very likely apply a €10 charge for a failed direct debit. If they have overdrawn your account to pay it, there will probably be a fee for this too, if you have no overdraft already arranged.

If you get money in there tonight (via online banking) or go to a branch and lodge first thing in the morning it MIGHT go through as they MIGHT check it again tomorrow before they return it but they might not.

If you do get to lodge ring your branch first thing and ask them can they process it? Up to them whether they facilitate you or not.
