Going to Edinburgh in few weeks and wondering which part of the city is the best place to stay? im trying to decide between the Apex City hotel in the Old Town or King James in the new town. we want to be fairly central to go shoppping and sightseeing during day and to pubs/clubs at night
can anyone recommened which would be the best?

Id recommend Jurys Inn. Located at the foot of the royal mile, you have everything on your doorstep.

That's what I was going to say too!

Good hotel and in a good location.

I stayed here, it was a great location and great value. It's a nice 4 star hotel

Try apartmentsapart.com. I used them two years a go to book an apartment when 5 of us were going to the Scotland v Ireland game, we're going to do the same this year. Decent prices

The Sheraton has rooms from 109 GBP per night if you book before tomorrow (Fri 9th)! - click on the Boxing Day Sale on the website. (rooms normally from £150 I think)
Bit of a bargain for a good 4 star hotel with pool and great location considering the Euro Vs Sterling rate.

if its the Apex in Grassmarket that your talking about, thats in a good location away from crowds although you will need to walk up a steep road to get to the Royal Mile/High Street.

Jury's is a better location as its smack bang on the main road.

Myself and my boyfriend found it very hard to find a decent place for breakfast, we eventually found a restaurant called 'The Pitstop'.

Its just down the road from St Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile or High Street. Its sort of like T.G.I's but soo much nicer and not as expensive. We had breakfast and dinner there.

I was going to stay at the Apex for the festival - but the Grass Market is such a nightmare this time of year (that whole end of town is full of people trying to sell tickets to wacky shows and the like) ended up staying at the Ramada Jarvis in Princess Street which was nice (got a view of the castle from the room)

jurys is beside a bridge up a side road. the bridge has two skanger type nightclubs under it:D.

    Grassmarket will be rowdy.

go for the ibis or radisson on the royal mile.

Definitely go old town. Lived in Edin for a couple of years - if you're touristing, it's the place to be. Friend went over recently and stayed in a beautiful apartment and it was much cheaper than a hotel and tehre were 4 of them in a 2 bed. Can get name of place if you're interested.
