    Hey dudes!

Bought my '79 car last year but didnt tax it at the time - too expensive for weekend use only (6.6l). Now that it's elligible for classic tax I'm gonna do it. Prob is the car is in the country the last four years and has never been taxed. I'm on the log book since june and can get the form stamped to say its been 'off the road' the last six months. Will it be this simple or will I come across any more barriers?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

the stamp from the cops should be enough so that you dont have to back tax it.
just make sure that it's the full 30 years old, i.e. 30 years old from Jan 1979 not March 1979

if you VRTd the car in June, it was eligable for irish TAX since that time. then the same applies as for all over cars off the road in regard to not back taxing them. Just wondering why you VRT'd in June as opposed to now? 350 vs 50 if it wasnt on the road.

It was VRT'd three years ago by the previous owner but never taxed. it was never 'officially' off the road, well apart from most weekdays!!! wasn't gonna pay the tax on a 6.6 car that I was only using the weekend but now as it's over the 30 mark I'm happy to pay the fifty quid!

My 944 wasnt taxed since 1991 until 2006...! I was living in the North at this stage and the car was southern reg....... I just said it had been off the road for 15 years and the Garda stamped the RF100 no problem...!

Its no problem getting them to stamp the form if its an old car... A modern car however is a different matter...!

So now with all the info I have I'm confident that I can get the RF100 stamped and away I go! This morning I check the log book and find that the car was first registered in June - I can live with another six months without tax on my weekender - but alas no! Date of first registration is June 1989! The car is most definitely a '79 model and my reg matches up accordingly, however how in hell do I get around this when trying to tax the car?!!!!

I'm afraid if the log book says it was first registered in 1989, there is not much you can do at the tax office.... they go with the date on the logbook. It could very well be that the car was originally registered in the UK, where it is quite common that the V5 only mentions the date of First registration in the UK, which is then ignorantly copied when the car is imported into Ireland.

I think the only option you have is to try and get proof of the fact that the car was indeed registered (!!! as opposed to manufactured!!!) somewhere in 1979 (! original US title, a copy of the V5 form which could have it down at the remarks section, that the car was 1st registered in 1979) and then contact the Vehicle Licensing in Clare, to see what they can do. You may have to reregister the car at the VRT offices....

When you get an RF100 stamped the garda is simply witnessing your signature...i.e. YOU are declaring the car has been off the road.
In theory you could still be liable to prosecution for a false declaration if it is proved your car was used in a public place during the period you declared it 'off the road'.

Correct and right - this would be abuse of the system. However it's not a daily car, just a bit of fun on the weekend so I'm not gonna feel overly guilty. As it happens there is a clerical error on the log book stating that the car is an '89 as opposed to a '79 so I can't tax it until this has been resolved - not my fault!

But the car obviously has a 79 D reg has it not?
I'm sure the people at the tax office can figure out this wouldnt be on an '89 car!
