    hello everyone
I have a big old house in the countryside, its had many extensions over the years. It was all reroofed about 15 years ago so the upstairs is all new, trouble is downstairs the building is a combination of old 3 ft thick stone walls and in some parts cavity block walls, I can heat the place fine but as soon as heating goes off its cold again, i know I could blow the stuff into the cavities but how could you go about insulating out external stone walls?
    any ideas
    cheers

There is a recent thread on this issue.
Kingspan or Xtratherm is great for insulating stone walls - leave a gap between the board and wall.

Sorry for dragging this thread back up but I find this kind of thing very interesting. It's a typical case study in Ireland but one which i feel hasn't been addressed properly by the industry.
What did you do in the end and do you have any problems with rising damp or condensation? especially around the junctions between old stone and concrete? what insulation did you use and did you apply any breathable membranes?

its still the same, never did anything, got a qote for external insulation back in the boom days..quote came to over 30k:eek::eek::eek:
for now I think I will just have to accept that its a hard house to heat but consider myself lucky as I have no mortgage

Jeez, that's an unreal price. I don't know a great deal about external insulation, its a bit more popular these days so the price may have come down a bit though. Did someone recommend ext. insulation to you?

I've just come across a crowd called pulse conservation, they may be able to recommend a solution to you. I'm sure they have come across a similar situation before.

Do you think you'll do anything about it?

unreal is right, and that didnt include lots of stuff like scaffolding and moving gutters etc..i ran them :)
to be honest the way things are I just couldnt be bothered borrowing money to do it, the house is very old in places with new bits here and there, the result is a huge house. I think if I ever do anything it will be some time in the future when maybe I will try and do a complete job on house, for the moment. have cousins that did external insulation on big old farmhouse, prob similar to my own situation..last I heard it made a great job of it

There are grants available now for external insulation, and have seen it been done to a number of houses. I think it's €4,000 for the external walls.
