    Hi

First off this is more a problem with my lack of IT skills as opposed to the PS3 itself. I just bought a PS3 and am having trouble getting an internet connection. I have gone through the set up options and all seems ok but I cannot connect online. Firstly i was having trouble with the IP address which I seem to have fixed. The latest problem they are giving me is a 'DNS' error which i have no clue how to fix.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

sorry. trying to connect with wireless. its picking up the signal and everything, put in the WEP key etc. I get through all that but at the end it wont connect.

Had the same problem at the weekend myself but hey presto got it sorted. However i was connecting through a laptop and vodafone modem. I went through the custom set up, put in the details such as IP address, default router, etc and did the test connection and the DNS error appeared. Then went back in and did the easy set up putting most things to automatic, checked the network button on the laptop was switched to on... i think this is also the wireless one as well so you may need to give it a flick! And surely enough got a connection.
Dont know if this helps.... prob not! :)

How are you actually connecting to the internet? Via a wireless router? My first thought is that your playstation is not picking up an ip address automatically from your router. If not then check your router actually serves out ip addresses via dhcp. Theres usually a setting in most routers that mentions dhcp server. Most of them come activated by default but you need to check if it is on yours. Set all the the settings to automatic on the network settings for the playstation (or basically just accept the default values).

The other likely thing is that your wep key is incorrectly input. Try it again, alternatively turn off wep on the router to test the PS3 connects without wep succesfully. Only turn off wep temporarily, you should not run a wireless setup without some sort of security.

Yes I am trying to connect via a wireless router. At first I don't think it was picking up the ip address. I resolved this as i share with friends and one of them has a ps3 so I used some of his settings and it seemed to get the ip address when I went through the step by step easy set up. At the end when I went to do the test connection it found the ip address but told me there was a DNS error (80710102). Im at a loss now as to what I can do.

I read an article this morning that said i should go on my laptop and change my firewall settings. I havent been home to try but would that sound right? I didnt think what i did on my laptop could fix the ps3 problem.

My IT skills are completly minimal so apologies again!!!!!!!!

It sounds like the MAC address filtering is enabled i.e. it will only allow connections from machines whos MAC adress has been allowed. Have a look through your system settings on the PS3 and you should find its MAC adress. Go into the Router settings and add it there.

Sorry for thread hacking a bit here but I'm also having problems with my PS3 and our Wireless Router...

I can connect the PS3 alright, no problems there. I can go online with the web browser, download games and demos, etc etc.

However, I can't play online with some of the games... I can't play online with Motorstorm for example. And I can connect online in LBP (to play custom levels created by other users) but I can't play with other people at the same time...

I think all these problems will be resolved by "putting the PS3 in a DMZ on my Wireless Route". But how do I do this exactly?

It is a "Buffalo AirStation WYR-G54". And we have a NTL connection. My flatmate told me that nop ports were being blocked by the roputer but he lost the password so we can't check... I think I'll have to do a Factory Reset... :(

It's not necessarily a problematic set up you have. If you go to the network status thing on the PS3, are you on NAT 2 or NAT 3. You need to be on NAT 2 and should search elsewhere for the exact McGubbins on how to do that.

Having said that, i went to NAT 2 as i was having the exact same problems on LBP and it STILL has problems; i think there are issues with the LBP servers too...

this might not be your fault. Check the NAT 2 side of things first - in summary, it's a case of

    a) assigning a fixed IP address to your ps3
    b) opening a few ports on your router - you can get info at http:portforward.com

ya possibly, no harm do reset anyway, ive no experience in that router, but if you can get into the router home page, and dmz is an option, all you have to do is put in the ps3 ip into the dmz option when you click it, fairly simple, you should be able find it in there some where eg for me it's 192.168.1.2 if you dont have dmz option, i'd completely turn off the router firewall, you dont need it of you have computer firewall, it just gets in the way imo, alternatively if you dont want to do that you will have to port forward the specific PSN ports to the ps3,
    • TCP Ports: 80, 443, 5223
    • UDP Ports: 3478, 3479, 3658
these work for the majority of games, some games like fifa 09 require adding more ports, but it'll tell you in the game manual if you do

You could be on to something there grumpytrousers!

I went into the "Settings & Connection Setting List" menu and at the very bottom I can see that "NAT Type" comes up as "Failed". So it's neither NAT1 nor NAT2...

I think I'll have to reset that router and do everything properly... Problem is I hate Networking and Routers and Wifi and all that cr@p! Is it hard to setup a Wireless Router from scratch?

Quick question lads! I was about to work up the courage to reset our router but I just thought of something there... Will I need to input our NTL Username in Password after resetting the router? Because we don't have these anymore. Or are these only important for the sh!tty little green NTL modem?
