Freelance nightmares

I was told by some people in the media that this recession would probably improve the chances of getting freelance work, i.e. media outlets wouldnt want to risk hiring someone so they would have more short term and freelance shifts. People would be laid off so outlets would need more freelances to keep costs down.

So far I've found it to be the complete opposite.

Two national newspapers I regularly pitch to have told me recently their budget wont strecth far enough to take on "ANY freelance"... any freelance, at all.

This morning I pitched to my local formerly cash rich newspaper and was told the same thing.

Any one else finding it similar?

Thank God I'm still in college and not trying to pay rent or live solely off this, yet.

Yeah, freelance budgets are down everywhere to be honest. Nobody's hiring at all, most people have staffing freezes and are looking at layoffs so the rationale is to give existing employees the work rather than immediately make staff redundant. Pay cuts will be the norm now too, for both employees and freelances

This is definitely the case and I can't see things improving any time soon. The publication I work for has cut freelance work completely, advertising revenue has hit the floor and the money is just not there.

Is there any other work you can do? I wouldn't like to be relying on freelance work for income at the moment.

Ah I havent had a "proper" job in ages so I always find a way to make a penney here and there. I do a bit of design and advertising layout on the side, still I want to write and I've got more ideas for features than America has bitter old neo-cons, it's frustrating when I've no where decent to get them printed. I'm actually prepared to work for free once they garuntee to print, just to add to my written portfolio. Grr.
