    Hello,

I know this is probably the wrong place to put this but i reckon you guys will know best..

I'm thinking of going on a road trip in italy this summer with my girlfriend and i'm looking for a few suggestions on routes.
I was thinking of sticking to the coast, not sure wheteher to do the adriatic or med side ? Or maybe around the alps ? Probably will be doing a bit of camping and staying in guesthouses etc..

    thanks

    T

    Thanks 3ps,

That's pretty much precisely the sort of thing i was looking for. You drove from ireland too? You're giving me ideas damn you! I'm not convinced of the reliablity of my daily driver though, 91 E30 with almost 200k mls up on her...but.. with a bit of prevenative maintenance and breakdown cover? hmmmmm...

    Thanks again

    T

Yep drove to Dusseldorf via the UK.

I would ensure the cooling system is up to scratch and your brakes are in good order. Unless you know of something else wrong the rest is up to chance.......

It was the first thing I thought of on reading the OP.
Haven't been there yet but hope to cycle it some day!

We drove to Monaco via Lyon/Marseilles and back through Northern Italy via San Remo, Turin, Aosta and on to the St Bernard Pass into Switzerland - great trip. ( Had intended on going across to Modena but it was just too much )
It is a lot of driving to be fair. ( And my scooby drank a drop at European motorway speeds I can tell you )

As a kid we used to drive from Ireland to Naples almost every year - great trip too but mostly took the most direct route as again its a lot of driving.

If your really keen on driving in Italy I suggest taking a piggyback on a train through France in at least one direction - motorways in France are costly, as is fuel.

Camp sites in France and Italy are first class too - not the sh*te holes you get here.

There are some terrific 100 mile stretches of france, non motorway, good restaurants.
Accomodation is excellect near certain motorway junctions, often a choice of up to six cheap hotels. Formula 1, balladins, etap, premier classe etc. rooms from 35 euro upwards(sleeps 3)

if you are a competent driver I strongly sugest you cross the Alps via Mont Cenis, its on top of the Frejus tunnel. via Modane (fr) to Suza (it). I used go over it in an articulated truck 30 years ago. Not possible now.

    regards, rugbyman
