I was going to post this in the 'Asking someone out' thread but it really deserves its own thread.although its been around for a while now. I know its probably far too long for most people here who have the attention span of half a goldfish but have a read off it anyway particularly #3 on the list :pac:

you know you live in 2006 when...

    1. You go to a party, sit down and take Bebo pics.
    2. You havent played solitaire with real cards in years.
    3. The reason for not staying in touch with your friends is that they don't have Bebo/MySpace.
    4. You'd rather look all over the house for the remote instead of just pushing the button on the TV.
    5. Your evening activity is sitting at the computer

Bit out of date I know but I remember my friend put this in her blog a few years back.

Another thing about this decade there are way too many hoodies around... I can still remeber when they a slight novelty but now for some people its their sole outfit.

I excpected that article to be a really smartarse trying-to-be-funny commentary on the 21st century, but it's all depressingly true :(

its actually depressing how much that article rings true in parts of my life right now.

    Really depressing.

though I wouldnt say it extends to just the internet.

I have a real hard time just getting my friends to argue with me alot of the time...

That's an excellently written and insightful piece. Kudos all around.

I especially liked this, what with all the Israel/Palestine stuff flying around here the past few days:
...where before we disagreed because we saw the same news and interpreted it differently, now we disagree because we're seeing completely different freaking news. When we can't even agree on the basic facts, the differences become irreconcilable.

I gotta agree with a lot of that. I'm an oul fella so I avoided most of the isolation aspect of the online world. Basically it was after my time, so I've got really close mates and I've had enough edges knocked off me through the rough and tumble of having to deal with people one way or another, bad or good.

My generation kinda got teh best of both worlds in some ways. Goes for education too. Now people have far more access to easy information than I would have dreamt of as an 18 year old. Yet the same questions and more seem to be asked. The info is there, but the need or ability to filter is overwhelming or something to a lot of people.

One thing I have seen in some younger types, especially young men. No or fewer brakes on their public persona, because they didn't get slapped socially(or actually in some cases) when they needed the rough edges smoothed off. OK I may be an arshole now, but I would have been a far worse one if that hadn't happened(hard to believe I know...).

I also see more young men who simply can't talk to women. Never mind pick them up. Just talking. Every bloke goes through some stage where he gets tongue tied, but it does seem worse nowadays. Women seem to be much better at establishing their social personalities for some reason. IMHO anyway.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

wtf is wrong with hoodies? Speaking as a smoker and not as a scumbag hanging around for mothers to leave the post office on 'Mickey-Money Monday'. They provide ma heed with much needed warmth while out smoking a fag on these cold nights - well its either that or have my family breath in my toxic cloud of death while smoking indoors.

Great article btw OP! Good find

Its an interesting article, but it really only has relevance for people whose lifes are centred 100% around the internet. I'd wager the vast majority of people reading thread this have more RL friends than internet friends....

nope it has to do with real life as well. even if you dont spend any time online, don't ever text anyone and don't use an iPod to avoid talking to people you will still deal with people who do. the article goes a long way to explain why people these days are the way they are. the dating thread reminded me of it because girls prefer a text apparently. the text is easier to ignore and therefore people who can't deal with awkward situations prefer them

There is a great book on this subject by Alain De Button,"Status Anxiety" it's called. Doesn't cover all of the reasons proposed by the author of that article but rather approaches discontent in society from more of a philosophical point of view.
