I downloaded files totalling 9.35gb. I looked at a dvd-r and read that it can take 4.7gb onto one disc. So I thought great, the stuff will fit onto two dvds.

However when I went to burn my burning software said I only had 4.4gb space on my dvd. Am I doing something wrong here? Is there any way I can access the full 4.7gb as I think the stuff I downloaded comes to 9.35gb with the intention of being burned onto two dvds.

I'd hate to have to use 3 dvds and have practically feck all on the third dvd....

This is quite a common thing and it works the same for hard-drives. When the marketing people get the disk they mark a gigabytes as one billion bytes. Your computer on the other hand will use the space in binary not decibel.

So you end up with 1,073,741,824 bytes for a gigabytes not 1,000,000,000. Works out at about 7% less space then advertised.
