A friend has asked me to help him to find out some industry information for a project he's working on.

I'd appreciate if anyone could help me to try to find out any information on the points below:
    1. What are the key computer players' (e.g. IBM, Apple, Del etc) market position by country for laptops vs. PC's? ]
    2. What is the break up between education, workforce and social use of PC's? How does that look again for PCs versus Laptops?
    3. Who manufactures PC? In other works does IBM outsource their construction to a third party and does that party provide construction of computers for other vendors?
    4. What health problems / productivity problems etc. studies have been done if any that link bad neck pain due to Laptop use?
    5. What are the growth rates for laptop use by Country (e.g. China, India, Middle East, Europe, Eastern Europe, US, UK, SE Asia)?
    Cheers

    Thanks for your help

It's not my work, I'm being a nice guy and attempting to help a mate. I don't actually know where you can get this exact information, but someone on this forum might work in the industry and may be kind enough to point me in the right direction.

If anyone can I'd appreciate it.

    Jasus Zas,

Thats sounds like an awful lot of info!. Might be better off doing a google search on it or checking with the vendor websites, you will find a lot of info on most vendor sites such as IBM.com etc.

I can answer Q3 for you though, PC construction is generally outsourced to multiple third party suppliers in China \ Asia obviously because of cheaper labour and costs. The parts and then shipped to Europe HQ's where they get assembled into the final product to avail of European tax breaks, which are then rebadged by the vendor. (Think Dell in Limerick).

Now in any PC, you could have multiple third party suppliers for each piece of hardware depending on the model type of the product. Like product A might have an Intel network card and product B might have a 3com network card etc.

So any one product by any one vendor could have upto 10 third party suppliers and yes the 3rd party supplier might supply parts to mutiple vendors such as Dell, IBM, Apple etc..

Basically all the big vendors do is assembly, badge and then ship!. Very little manufacturing done by any of the big PC names to be honest.

A good example is IBM, where a chinese company called Lenovo used to manfacture the IBM Thinkpad and all IBM did was a rebadge. So a few years back IBM just decidied to sell its PC business to Lenovo altogether, which is why IBM PCs are now badged Lenovo...
