Doors

They may be the only thing standing between you and the horde and the weak link in any safe house.

It's all to easy to say my fortified safe house won't have any doors but when savaging it will be important to know your doors. which ones will keep out a horde and how to get through them without leaving them open for the zombies.

Theres also a problem with the place I plan to hide out. It has very big automated garage doors. While I'm sure they could hold out many zombies I think they might cave if the worst happened and hundreds of zombies where pushing up against them. The main advantage of them though is the ability to get vehicles inside, handy for repairs or emergency's.

Can anyone think of a good way of getting through just about any door without damaging the lock so it can be closed again?

Ah but i wouldn't base my stronghold on the usefulness it is to vehicles, as vehicles aren't the best way to be getting around in a Zombie Apocalypse. Your feet are :)

Doors / windows are obviously a weak link in any stronghold. The ideal would be to have none at all on the ground floor level (much like old Irish round towers).

    Instead use a retractable ladder.

While I know this isn't practical in our door-happy modern world, if you had the resources and cash, you could build such a stronghold, or brick up the entrances to your house etc after Z-Day.

If and when society re-emerges after Z-Day, hopefully they'll have the foresight to build their homes in this manner anyway...

Fuel, and think about the amount of traffic there would be in the start of the outbreak, and then after, be debris, dead body's, and empty cars everywhere. getting around in a car would be a nightmare all the roads be blocked up. Hence walk :)

You're basing that assumption on American films though. Dublin would be blocked but why would people flee to the other cities? Most Irish people will probably stay at home as I'd imagine the country would be locked down fairly rapid. Most Irish people live in the countryside and will wait for the problem to come to them. I reckon most Irish roads outside of major urban areas will be deserted because of this.

The only place there will be a major panic is in Dublin. Bar Cork it's the only major international hub in the country. All other airports are in the middle of nowhere.

I've already said I don't think you'll find a great fuel shortage after the outbreak either. Ireland is a small Island nation one fill of petrol will get you across the country and back and like I've said we'll have nowhere to go anyway, most panic based trips will only o across the country and if their lucky back home again.

We have to stop basing our plans on American films because they don't apply here.

    +1

In fact people need to stop basing their plans on films (if they are!!!), and build their plans based on their situation.

The danger being that the best laid plans... :D

If you're planing to survive, I'd plan based on tried and tested survival techniques integrated into a post Z-day environment.

Yes that is a problem. :D The fact is you won't want to be spending to much time in the city after the outbreak. To many people to stick around and try and stick it out.

A sort of drawbridge that faces off the entire doorway, once raised it is just more wall. weights and levers inside could allow you to raise it in seconds.

Also some form of airlock, if survivors come you will need to hose em down to get Z blood and gunk off them, also you would need to be able to inspect for bites and scratches. Worst case scenario is quarantineing them for 48 hours (Providing food and blankets OFC).

I suppose you could circumvent the issue is you were to build your stronghold on a stilted building.

I spent some time in St. Lucia during the summer, and a lot of their style of architecture is based on houses on stilts.

I'm sure you could modify this design to leave out the built in stairway to the front door.

Also, if you had a couple of like minded neighbours, you could have drawbridges between houses.

It neatly gets rid of the door problem, cause your doors are twenty feet above ground level! :D
