gear slipping?

I have a standard Raleigh road bike where the gears are changed by twisting on the handlebar , this "gismo" (Grip Shift MRX) is slipping and changes the gear to the hardest setting. the wire look like it needs to be tightened but not sure where to get at it? any help would be appreciated.

There is probably a barrel adjuster at the rear derailleur.
