What lenses have you bought on the CHEAP and been plesently suprised.........

No pro glass aloud! (Unless it was dirt cheap B-) )

Heres my two to start the ball rolling

    1. Super takumar m42 50mm f1.4 €35 inc delivery off ebay

This is one SHARP lens. At f1.7 I cant tell the difference between it and my dads minolta f1.4 (a much much more expensive lens). Its also made of solid metal which I like. The lack of af is more than made up by the sharpness.....

    2. Minolta 75-300 APO f4-5.6
€120 local camera shop. Cond: near mint - not a scratch
Going for 200-250 on ebay now :)

Bought this when I returned the sigma 70-300 apo. The af on the sigma sounded like gravel and was fuzzy at the long end..... The minolta on the other hand was built of metal aswell and gave a nice solid feeling and was way way sharper then the sigma at the long end and the colours are nicer too. Also got a all the origional packaging and two pro filters - not bad for a 14 year old lens.....

Would have included the minolta 50 f1.7 but that was found in the house but there going for 60-100 on ebay now!

Also, for the medium format folk out there, I have a look on fleaBay recently... Good god, the price of second hand Hassey lenses has dropped and dropped and dropped. Zeiss Distagon's going for half nothing.

    This seems a good buy:

Is is possible to buy this from a shop in Dublin?
The comment section in the link indicates that I would need a K adapter as well, to use it on my Pentax MZ 50.

These old film cameras seem to be less supported in shops than they deserve.

M42s will work well on canon, sony/minolta, work well with with adapters, not so sure about pentax but Afaik they work but not well on nikon

    50mm f2 Nikkor-H (Pre-Ai)
40 years old, 35 euro from ebay.

Sharpest lens I have - at f2.8 it beats anything else I have in my cheapie collection. And f2 gives you a free "dreamy" filter for portraits ;)

And really - the good old 18-55 is a fantastic lens for its cost.

along more conventional lines, the Canon 28-105 f3.5 MKII is a fantastic lens for the price (which I believe is under 200 quid at this stage). True it's not wide enough for crop bodies, but it really outshines the kit lenses out there

Mine has it stamped 4 times... As if you'd be forgetting :D

The biggest problem is inconsistency in quality. You just cannot insure good quality.
I'll try to get some cheaper cameras home to have them shipped here. Would you like to know prices also of some medium format cameras?

I've seen Prague prices... Give us an update though, I'm thinking of a TLR at the moment... We'll see, we'll see.

    Ragefinder: Zorkij+50/3,5 - €40.00
MF: Caerl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 180/2,8 MC - €130.00
    MF: Kijev 80 + 45/3,5, 80/2,8, 65/3,5, 250/3,5 - €360.00
    MF: KIEV 88 TTL, Arsat 80mm f2.8, 2 casettes - €240.00

I think that the first boards photography trip abroad will happen in Prague :D

The prices are from Prague shop, that is "not the cheapest".

  • Registered Users Posts: 16,624 ✭✭✭✭Fajitas!

What fit is the Sonnar 180? And is it leaf shutter? :D

If it won't fit on my Hassey, it'll fit on the Mammy, but I'd like a 180 for the Hassey.

Is that the shop just off the main street?

Not specified. It is different shop - Foto Skoda.
There are at least 4 shops with second hand cameras in 10 minutes walking distance. This one is the most commercial (having also new stuff, films and even their own gallery).
And the links to working czech version of Medium Format Cameras and Medium Format Lenses.
