They get more ridiculous and pointless as they go along. Gave up after Saw 4, which was dreadful, and 5 is meant to be even worse. The first one did something unique and different for sure (even if the whole thing is OTT nonsense), but the sequels are progressively worse. If you really like the films watch the third one as it is better than the second, but anything after is well worth ignoring.

The first was good, but the quality of the sequels fell faster than Hans Gruber, avoid.

    Saw III is quite good.

Saw IV and V are unrelenting drivel of the highest caliber.

    I saw I, II and V.
The first two were alright and I just didn't like the fifth one.
There's a story throughout it seems, but its easy enough to pick up.
The two main characters in it where too similar to tell apart half the time and the gore was tamer than usual I thought.
    I hope 3 and 4 are better ;)

Thought the third was the best of the sequels... but the 4th was awful, and wasn't arsed in seeing the fifth.

Have to say that I've enjoyed all 5 films to date. The original is one of the best horror films of the past decade and did'nt rely on gore but instead a great little story. The sequels have upped the gore ante and become more and more violent as the franchise progressed but part 5 has far more in common with the original than any of the sequels.

I know it's far from great cinema but I do look forward to each new film.

First one is a terribly, terribly overrated movie IMO.
2nd one is crap,3rd crappier,4th crappiest,5th -havnt seen it and am so uninterested Im not even arsed downloading it- but by all accounts it reaches previously unsucked regions of sucktitude.
This franchise died on its arse after the 1st one which was mildly entertaining at best.

Like most, I enjoyed the first one. The second one was a decent sequel I thought, not great, but enjoyable as a second outing.

The third is where things started going wrong IMO. I disliked it so much that I didn't bother watching 4 and 5.

I saw the first one and i liked it,Thought the second one was ok,And thought the third was better than the second but after what i heard about 4 and 5, I am not really arsed about them.!

Seen the first one only last week, thought it was very good...original ideas and believeable story with just enough gore to not put it ott. Next on my horrors to watch list is the remake of My Bloody Valentine 3d in cinemas soon:D

OT: Oh God... last time they used the 3D gimmick in horror was a 5 or 6 minute segment at the end of 'Freddy's Dead' - it was woeful - both as a film and as a 3D segment.

3D has changed greatly since obviously.. but a turd in 3D is still a turd. Especially with 'My Bloody Valentine 3D' having such a competent director behind it, having made such classics as 'White Noise 2' and 'Dracula 2000'

    ** shudder **

Early word is quite good and this gave me a lot of hope "Rated R for graphic brutal horror violence and grisly images throughout, some strong sexuality, graphic nudity and language".

I'm looking forward to this, in the hopes that its better than Scar 3D, the last horror 3D in cinemas.

Bad story. Bad acting. Bad 3D.

I got the impression they had a terrible over all film and decided to throw 3D onto it, thinking it'll make it better.
Hope My Bloody Valentine is alot better!!

I do believe there is a Saw 6 on the way. I don't want any more.

    Only watched the first one.
It was all going pretty well until the end.
Why didn't he reach out for the phone using the saw? By taking off his shirt and tying it to the saw he could have reached the phone if it was 3 or 4 foot away...the bloody thing was at his fingertips, just out of reach, and he chooses to saw off his foot? Sorry, the whole thing just became daft in that one moment. Ruined the whole film, cause it was all built up to that point. If he had reached for it with the saw, in a panic, and knocked it skittering across the floor, 10 foot away...it would have worked. In the 5 seconds of screentime that would have taken, he would have been left with no other option.
I saw the trailer for the second one and thought it looked like a lazy rip-off of Cube. But then, I don't dig gorno. I prefer intelligent horror that plays with your head and leaves most of the gruesomeness to the imagination.

I actually thought White Noise 2 was pretty good! Enjoyable, and it did have Nathan Fillion....

Certainly a lot better then the original movie which was a total turd.

Until yesterday I thought that movie was about a band!

Saw 1 should just be referred to as "Saw". A movie in it's own right, with nothing in common with the cash-in sequels.

in my opinion if you liked the first one you'll love the second one. otherwise avoid. it was all pretty much downhill after that but if you're a fan of horror/thriller give it a go and make your own mind up. i truly loved the first 2 by the by!

i really liked the 1st one but i thought the 2nd one was nothing much , i recently watched a 1st cousin of saw , hostel 2 , how that move wasnt banned is beyond me , made saw look like barney the dinasaur

    ^^^^^
    Wha?
The first Hostel was waaaaaaay more brutal/nasty than the second.Part 2 was bordering on parody IMO.The only 2 decent scenes are the Countess Bathory scene and the castration but both are so laughable that they arent even close to being shocking.Try Murder Set Pieces.;)

i havent seen the 1st saw but the 2nd one was a disgusting and nasty piece of trash with no redeemable features

Except the 2 scenes I mentioned.;)

I'd consider myself to have a fairly high nastiness tolerance, but that whole Countess bit was borderline pantomine. Was way too OTT to be taken seriously. Perhaps it would be possible to film that scene in a way that would shock effectively, but as it stands looked to me as Eli Roth trying too hard to offend. I still think the first one is a decent piece of schlock, but the second is headache inducingly awful (especially the 'feminist' themes and symbolism). Same could be said about Saw and its sequels really - the original was a pretty fresh piece of entertainment, with the sequels increasingly trying to plumb the depths of absurdity for more shocks, and failing. Horror and torture can be handled effectively - see some of the nastier scenes in Hostel (the eye goo) or Audition (the whole final act really). But as you say, this has been replaced by self parody in a lot of cases, the Saw sequels being the increasingly pitiful examples.

If you like Saw watch Cube

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,925 ✭✭✭Otis Driftwood

Cube is much better than Saw but it too suffers from horrible sequels.

the bit where yer man from desperete housewives is teasing the girl with the angle grinder and then ends up cutting half her scalp off is revolting , the cold , life is cheap attitude of the eastern europeans is off putting in the extreme also

When you've watched as much horror as I have, and I dont mean Hollywood horror,I mean stuff like Mu Zan E or August Underground then you will know what I mean.Hostel 2 is so cartoony it fails to do anything than raise a chuckle in me.Its like a Herschell Gordon Lewis movie for the MTV generation.

I heard they are making another "bad sequel" for one of the best little horror gems The Decent.

    http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/06/16/first-look-the-descent-2/

Why don't they leave the good ones alone !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,925 ✭✭✭Otis Driftwood

Doesnt bother me cos I thought the Descent was very over rated but I know what you mean.

while no afficinado , i do like horror , for example i love the original hellraiser and i love the evil dead movies but while they were gory as fcuk , thier was a bit of style there , i found hostel to be nasty for the sake of it

btw , whats the goriest movie youve ever seen , most horror fans from what i hear seem to regard the italian movie from the early 80,s cannibal hollocaust to be in a league of its own

None of the below trailers are suitable for work etc

The goriest is probably Braindead. But that is so OOT its just great craic as opposed to nasty.

Basquille mentions August Undergrounds Mordum above. Its propably the sickest movie Ive ever seen.I actually felt a bit dirty after watching it.

A more recent very cool gore movie is Fetus.

    Or the Gateway Meat.

Philosophy of a Knife is awesome too.
