my video collection consists of MP4, AVI, DIVX, Real player files, MPG and now MKV. What player will play all types of files. Ive been using VLC player but it seems to struggle with real files, same as real player struggles with MKV files?

i found out somewhere that vlc will be supporting real files in the the 1.0 release - we are at 0.9.8a now so hopefully any day !
i ran into the problem you have now and decided to wait and see how is goes

source: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html hit Video Formats on the left, and note 3 (RV30 and RV40 are the real formats i ran into)

xbmc plays most of them. The only one I've seen it struggle with is MKV, but I've an older version so newer versions might have this fixed.

I think they are planing \ have released a version for the PC.
