Well, I must say 95% of the Chinese restaurants in Ireland that I have tried have been terrible imo. The other 5% are fantastic. I ask for no MSG.

What do you ask for? Do you even think to ask? :)

Ah, what's the point in getting a Chinese if its not got MSG in it?
I mean you wouldn't ask for a 'grease-free' Big Mac, would you? It wouldn't be the same!

You can always tell the difference in your food when they dont use MSG. Asian Tea House In Galway dont use it in theirs, still good food though :)

The whole MSG being bad for you thing was disproven, but never hit the mainstream, and people still avoid, afraid they'll get cancer. I have no idea of when food has or hasn't got MSG.

How do you know when MSG is in your chineese?
And do they listen to you when you ask for it NOT to be included?
Also, do they put MSG in the prawn crackers?

    I'd read that somewhere too.
The one thing I do remember being told about Chinese food is never to reheat Fried Rice in the microwave. Something to do with the rate of bacterial growth on it. -Won't kill you, but it can leave you on the jacks for a good while.

You can ask for no MSG? Hmmm. I wonder what it tastes like...spit?
It's an (man-made) excitotoxin; I'm under no illusion that it's healthy. I never linked it to cancer, has anyone? I'm quite sure it can't be good for the brain or neurosystem. I reckon it'll be the 'next big cause of Alzheimer's' - according to Sky News et al
Brains are overrated anyway. meh. As long as it recognises nice food, that's all that matters. mmmmmMSG.
PS: Your tap water is killing you. Your light bulbs are eating your soul. Your microwave and mobile phone are making you infertile. The government are just harvesting you for your organs (Not your brain. No money it them, you see)

    Lol... omgwtfbbqsauce

Try not putting it in in the first place rather than avoiding something that perhaps should or shouldnt be in the food...

I think MSG coats the tongue, therefore makes everything taste better.

Well, maybe not everything, never tried it sprinkling in on ....

    lightbulb moment perhaps :D.

Would be like getting loads of old fish and letting them "mature" for a couple weeks in the hot sun in the open air in your front garden. Intenseee.....

I don't care if it's got MSG or not, if it tastes good then I eat it.

In fairness that's a pretty unusual reaction. Plenty of people are allergic to completely natural and safe foods. Any argument about whether it improves the taste or is generally unhealthy is quite another issue.

MSG is the reason I don't eat much Chinese food in Ireland. It makes me feel absolutely crap afterwards. Bloated, tingling tongue and just generally sick. Had it all the time in the States without a bother. It makes me laugh when people give me a hard time about avoiding MSG. It's not because of some cancer scare, it's because it makes me feel awful. Why on earth would I eat something that was both unhealthy and made me sick?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭sunnyjim

Bwahaha at the person who asks for no MSG. All the sauces have been prepared since 10am that morning, so unless they spend 20 minutes making you up a new one, you're getting that msg one :)

I don't really see a problem with it. FDA say its GRAS (generally regarded as safe) and they spend a lot of time and money researching these things. Too much ruins a meal, sure. But it's just another salt to be added IMO.

Besides, plenty of restaurants and chefs (one expensive one over the southside of dublin and Heston Bluementhal) are going out and purposly buying loads of colourings, preservatives, emulsifiers and experiment with adding them to meals. Think jelly that stays together when heated etc...

Oh, since when did Tayto add it to their cheese and onion? I just checked the pack I'm eating and there it is, E621. I knew King and pringles (among others) use it, didn't think Tayto did though!!
