Watched this again last night on RTE2. Absolutely brilliant film, with a strong anti-war message and a very claustrophobic athmosphere. What does anybody else think of it?

Really classic film, the ultimate submarine film?
If i had one criticism, the ending, not to give anything away, but after investing so much in the characters and seeing them go through so much, i was pulling my hair out at the end. I suppose its the most logical ending. Great movie though

That is kind of the point though, that nobody wins in war.

First class movie. AFAIK the series was even longer (BBC2 showed it years ago and it took up a few videos).

I have the book and it's one of the few books I genuinely found it very difficult to put down. A lot of humour that is missed out in the movie.

One of my favourite film. Love the sense of claustrophobia throughout and the tension waiting for the depth charges to blow. Great film.

Brilliant movie. Submariners with all the glamour stripped away. Excellent portrayal.

Anti-war? Is there such a thing as pro-war?

I can think of more then a few films with a pro war, gung ho ethos. During WW2, Noel Coward produced a number of films which set out to ostensibly portray the bravery of the british tommy in the glorious war against fascism.
An even more obvious example would be John Wayne's "The Green Berets" which was released during the Vietnam War and was heavily criticized for its pro war view though I think John Wayne just wanted to express support for the Soldiers in Vietnam rather then the war itself.
Then there is those 80's Reagan era action movies where every problem can be solved with a gun and a bad pun!
The last X Men movie could also been seen as pro war.I quote the blogger Anthony Kaufman: "When Magneto shames the X-Men as sell-outs for coming to the defense of the military, I was on his side. And in an endorsement of neocon-style pre-emption, Wolverine's mantra is, "The best defense is a good offense," later to be repeated by Storm in the climactic battle, where the intellectual Beast decries "diplomacy" in favor of busting heads. Dare I say I don't think I've seen in the last few years a Hollywood climax so intent on justifying the Bush Regime's wartime policies"

Yes I have see that one, its so unusual to see a pro-war Vietnam film, Im used to the likes of Apocylypse Now and Full Metal Jacket.

Excellent movie alright! Really draws you in, until you almost feel like you are stuck 270m+ at the bottom of the ocean struggling to survive!. Its one of those movies that I could watch over and over and never get tired of.

Love the camera work at the 'alarm!' sequences where the guys are rushing to there posistions through the narrow walkways and doorways, brill!

Its a brilliant war film and one of the best ever made. I've loved it since I first saw it. It and something else were also the first dvds that I bought.

I read somewhere that Wolfgang Petersen got the cast to spend three months living indoors so that their skin would get pale like a real subs crew.
