    Hi,

My laptop dc seems to have ended its life...at first we were able to still make it work, with a little wiggling on the connector, but now its gone. Is there any shop in ireland that does this kind of repairs? I'm only living around here for 4 months so I don't know the safe & cheap stores

I was only able to find one, but the price seemed very expensive...

    Thanks!

It might possibly be a faulty charger - Ebay would be the cheapest place to find a replacement.
If the DC connector in the laptop is damaged you may be looking at a new laptop, not sure of many places that repair these.

how old is the laptop? There are companies that replace DC sockets on laptops. Google DC socket repair and you'll find a few companies.

There's a shop in Dun Laoghaire called "New Paddy" that do computer repairs. Your problem is either to do with the plug and cable itself, or else the connection on the computer, which would be a bit more complicated. You may need genuine acer parts or maybe something generic would do.

I went into the guys in New Paddy for a problem I was having, was in there for about 15 minutes trying to figure it out with them, they got it working, but it didn't require anything to be bought and they didn't charge me so the least I can do is recommend them and that I will as they were very friendly and helpful and some guy came in to collect a computer when I was there, I haven't a clue what he had done or repaired, maybe something small installed, but it was only 35 euro!

Thank you very much for all your pointers.

I found out yesterday a company which actually does this kind of stuff, but they were asking 80 euro plus parts. I just bought a new cable from ebay for 20€ which should arrive during this week, since the universal one from Kensington that I bought from a large pc store in Jervis Centre (which, btw, I don't recommend when it comes to price:quality) and which costed me 80€ broke one of the pins used to plug the cable-connector to one of the several connectors for different laptop brands and now it's unusable.

I hope it's just a matter of cable quality. However, I would seriously love to have acer looking at the puter, because I only have 1/3 USB ports usable... the PC fell off the shelf with 2 usb's plugged in (quite lucky that was actually the only 2 things to break)

Thanks for all your help, but if you know of any company that deals directly with acer or an acer representative here in Dublin, I would appreciate it (I will still look into the on on Daun Longhaire if the cable doesn't work)!

Is your computer still in warranty do you know? Acer have a 1 year manufacturers warranty or an optional 3 year one which you would have purchased at time of sale. If it's out of warranty, you'd have to cover shipping to and from the UK and also the service charge and repair costs. I think they charge you for just looking at it even if they don't do any work :(

Actually have a read of this, this is from some mails I got when I had an acer with a problem:
    Regarding your enquiry,

As you are located in Ireland you will need to contact our repair centre that carry out all our warranty repairs for Eire and Northern Ireland. If you have your serial number, your fault description and address details ready when you call they will book your machine in and arrange the repair for you.

    ER-Media LTD
Unit 26 Scarva Road Industrial Estate
    Banbridge
    Northern Ireland

Hello, Thank you for contacting Acer.

    Regarding your enquiry,

This would be classed as a chargeable repair, the process would be the following.

There will be a £35 + VAT charge taken from you before your machine is brought in for repair. You will then be given courier details so that you may arrange collection of your machine for shipment to our repair centre. Once received in the repair centre it will undergo assessment by one of our technicians. They will draw up a written proposal for you containing full details pertaining to your repair. This will be sent to you by post giving you seven days to respond.

Once you have received the proposal you have the option to reject it, which means the £35 + VAT will cover the engineer and couriers fees, and the machine will be returned to you un-repaired. If you accept the proposal the £35 + VAT is deducted from the final bill and the repair then goes ahead.

After seven days, if your proposal is not signed and returned to us by fax or post the repair is defaulted as rejected, your machine is not repaired, and shipped back to you.

If you would like to book your machine in for an assessment please let us know and we will make the necessary arrangements.

    Regards

I'd imagine PC World have somebody who can repair that although there are better places.
Where did you buy it? Sometimes the repairs for these are ridiculous so get a few quotes. With the large price drop in laptops in general now you could find that a new cpu with the same specs is almost the same as the repair. Although i wouldn't imagine this is the case for a connection problem like this.

I reckon that figure is pretty good if you need to get the work done. There is a fair bit of work involved in dismantling a laptop.

The laptop that we're speaking about is not mine, it's my wife's, and, it's quite a bit old but still very functional (with XP, at least), it's an ACER Aspire 3500. I know there's a great deal of work involved in dismantling a laptop, I went thru that myself at half-way but came back shortly after as I didn't have any manuals to help me put everything back in place afterwards. I reckon sending it to the UK for 35£ and deciding afterwards whether to buy a new one or to repair this would be the best choice for us, but my wife is so impatient about not being able to work from anywhere in our apartment that she's quite mad and she wants to try the cable we bought off ebay first and then check the pricing at the New Paddy store that the fella up there suggested if the cable is just not enough. :-)

Once more, thanks a lot for all your help!

Midia distribution are the official acer supplier for Ireland and possibly do repairs

as regards getting the data you would be better taking out the hard drive and hooking it up to another PC via a usb caddy or adaptor and get the data off that way

Hi I'm interested in buying an Acer laptop but I'm concerned about what happens if there is a fault within the warranty period. Assume the fault is covered by the manufacturer. Do I have to post it back to the shop online - after they've agreed or contact Acer directly?

Dc jack doesnt mean a new laptop. Any serious computer repair place can repair the dc jack. http://dellrepairs.ie/can do it and are located along the north circular road
