4.2.2.2 or 4.2.2.1 I've used at times and found good.

+1 on Open DNS. been using them, in conjunction with an internal DNS at home, and it works great. the short cuts rocks too! to get to Google Reader, i just type in reader, and it knows where i mean (setup in their control panel).

An important aspect is that it should be secure and not easily poisoned.

Many are very insecure, which means the correct address is displayed in the address bar, but it is really a different IP (if poisoned), of a fake web page, which can do a man in the middle attack (All your details are fed to the real site and the page is updated from real site). Thus your account details are stolen even though the transaction was perfect.

Level3 are good and are not fakes.

I'd also recommend 4.2.2.1. The difference can be very noticeable on some connections. I tried eircom's default DNS one day. It was terrible.

I'm wary of OpenDNS and what sort of ways of revenue generation they have down the road...

Which says very bad things about Eircom since Level3 don't have any connectivity to Ireland.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS

While the OpenDNS name resolution service is free, people have complained about how the service handles failed requests. If a domain cannot be found, the service redirects you to a search page with search results and advertising provided by Yahoo. A DNS user can switch this off via the OpenDNS Control Panel.
    ...
Also, a user's search request from the address bar of a browser that is configured to use the Google search engine (with a certain parameter configured) may be covertly redirected to a server owned by OpenDNS without the user's consent (but within the OpenDNS Terms of Service).[12] Browsers configured to omit this parameter do not get redirected and address-bar searches are sent to Google as normal.[12]. Firefox and Flock users can fix this problem by installing an extension.[13]

Advantage of OpenDns is that You can filter adult content, phishing websites and more

    +1 Level3 (4.2.2.1 4.2.2.2)

Mostly because of the sneakiness of OpenDNS.
They misuse the word Open (it sounds like it's open source and some noble cause but it's not, it's pure moolah)

4.2.2.1 is easy to remember too :)

PS I did a traceroute to OpenDNS and Level3, Eircom and Digiweb.

Eircom and Digiweb are around 20 ms for me (Galway)

    OpenDNS and Level3:
It's very funny actually, both are normally < 30 ms but seem to be very close to each other on the net:

    OpenDNS
    3 19 ms 18 ms 18 ms gi-5-1.dub-deg-br1.net.digiweb.ie [83.147.162.22
    ]
    4 18 ms 19 ms 19 ms 213.242.106.77
    5 18 ms 20 ms 18 ms ae-11-11.car1.Dublin1.Level3.net [4.69.136.93]
    6 34 ms 46 ms 37 ms ae-5-5.ebr1.London1.Level3.net [4.69.136.90]
    7 29 ms 34 ms 30 ms ae-11-55.car1.London1.Level3.net [4.68.116.143]

    8 39 ms 29 ms 33 ms xe-3-3.r01.londen03.uk.bb.gin.ntt.net [129.250.8
    .137]
    9 33 ms 29 ms 38 ms 83.231.146.198
    10 34 ms 30 ms 26 ms resolver1.opendns.com [208.67.222.222]

    LEVEL3
    ...
    3 16 ms 17 ms 24 ms gi-5-1.dub-deg-br1.net.digiweb.ie [83.147.162.22]
    4 19 ms 24 ms 119 ms 213.242.106.77
    5 21 ms 20 ms 19 ms ae-11-11.car1.Dublin1.Level3.net [4.69.136.93]
    6 28 ms 33 ms 34 ms ae-5-5.ebr1.London1.Level3.net [4.69.136.90]
    7 163 ms 201 ms 214 ms ae-11-55.car1.London1.Level3.net [4.68.116.143]

    8 33 ms 41 ms 28 ms vnsc-pri.sys.gtei.net [4.2.2.1]

Now, I don't know if Level3 in those server names is the same as level3 the company.

But if they are the same, isn't it ironic that OpenDNS is making money by providing a 'service' that is 2 hops more, making money out of it, running over pipes by company Level3 that runs the same service for free?

If Level3 here is not the same I take my comment back except for the 2 hops extra :)

i have been using level3 for several months after a similar thread on here a while ago warning about the lack of openness in opendns and their logging of dns requests (which level3 don't do) which doesn't go together well with some of my less than 100% legitimate usage of the net, but have had quite a bit of trouble with them since i moved from BT to NTL so I've gne back to using opendns as it's working a lot more reliably. it's probably something ntl are doing (although not sure what) as i never had any issues before moving from BT but i have to go with what works. :(
