    Hi all,
I recently got a dell laptop for xmas, all was goin fine with it until today. The machine says i have limited connectivity and that i am connected to the network and not the internet. My brother has a vista laptop running of the same router and his internet connection is perfect. Ive been trying since late afternoon to resolve this problem but have had no luck with it all so far, maybe someone could help me?

    Thanks

help us help you - what have you done to try and solve it so far; what differences are there between the 2 laptops

I tried a simple reboot of the laptop and plugged out the router for 10 minutes, then turned of the firewall on the laptop, still no luck.
As far as differences go with the laptops, there are very few, both are about the same age and my brothers laptop is a dell as well and been used the exact same way as mine since it came out of the box i.e mainly web browsing, hope this helps a bit.

does it connect to the internet if you connect it directly through the modem? Take the router out of the equation for a moment.

you might also need to get updated drivers for your network adapter. Using your brothers laptop and a memory key you should be able to find them on the dell website. In all honesty though if the laptop is that new, you really will get the fastest and most effective response by going to the dell website and using the 24/7 online technical support chat

if you have norton antivirus on your laptop and your brothers laptop doesn't then thats the problem, i had the same problem before on a nixer laptop i was working on. either remove norton and install avg or something free like that for vista, or else get on to dell and ask them to send you an update for norton that will allow it to work on vista....do you use ntl for your broadband? if so then i reckon that defo your problem....

At this stage I would be shocked if laptops were shipping with anything older than norton 2008, which is more than compatible with Vista. Mine having shipped with 2007 I can't say I had any such problems. And I dont see why your ISP would be the problem as you have 2 comparable laptops where only one of them is not working.

Go ahead and talk it over with dell: http://support.euro.dell.com/support/topics/topic.aspx/emea/shared/support/chat/en/hardware_chat?c=ie&l=en&s=gen

Hi again, i use eircom broadband, ive tried to manually enter the IP address settings, still no luck.
I Have all the network connection settings configured the same as they are on the laptop that is working fine. I also uninstalled norton the day i got the laptop and put AVG on it, was working perfectly till yesterday, this is really baffling me, ill try the dell support now, thanks for the advice people.

    Then be shocked. :)
Norton internet security comes with the laptops and yet in a lot of cases, it causes all sorts of hassle for internet, particularly mobile broadband.

Can you please try plugging in the router with an ethernet cable and tell us how you get on (if you haven't done so already).

Also system restore is a great tool in these situations.

I had this problem before. honestly, try right clicking on the network icon, oepn network and sharing center, and then view status.
then disable it, leave it for 30-40 seconds, and then go back to the network and sharing center, and on the left choose manage network connections, there should be just one connection. Right click and click Enable.

Worked for me my PC told me I ahd two or more active connections.
BTw did you tr the "diagnose and repair" button?

I've had this problem, its an utter bollocks

Basically as MrDrifter said disable your network connection for a brief period, curse at it and re-enable it. Should do the trick. If not, restart your computer multiple times

sorry, i wasnt' implying that ntl was the problem here, its just when i was googling the issue when i was dealing with it, ntl, vista, norton, and lack of internet connectivity all kept on coming up on forum posts about the issue, and the problems were circa 2006.

See this problem all the time OP all you might have to do is open the network and sharing center in the control panel . you will see you network click customize over on the right and set it to private. Usually happens after you've connected to another network etc.

    Hope that works

as above posters have said, disable and enable your network adapter, that failing , i would try a system restore next , back to pre the issue that you are having,

    hope it works out.

This happened for me when I had a wrong WEP key entered into the connection settings. Try re-entering the key!

I tried what Mrdrifter was suggesting by disabling the wireless connection in Network sharing centre, that doesnt seem to be working, also tried hooking up the laptop to the modem directly via a ethernet cable and it still wont connect to the internet.
Ive restarted the laptop numerous times and it still says the same.:(

Then would you not please contact Dell already? for all we know it could be a hardware defect - thats what warrantees are for.

    Christ.

Perfect choice have you tried what i suggested earlier ??? I would nearly put money on it working ;-)

hey i got the internet working again :) turns out it had something to do with comodo firewall as well as the windows one running, even though i thought i turned off the windows one, so i uninstalled the comodo firewall and the it connected the net again straight away.
Thanks again for all your help.

eircom and windows firewall & comodo firewall will work perfectly together

i had mine going fine.........sadly though my motherboard blew last night (unrelated problem ---- due to a bad chipset cooling design) anyways once i get my new motherboard (not gonna be the same as previous piece of sh1t)
ill be using the comodo and windows firewall together again

dont buy an Asus M2N-E sli the chipset is awful....overheats constantly and posittioned under the end of your graphics card makes fitting a fan extremely difficult
