List of Sportives

Is there a list of Sportives anywhere that run throughout Ireland?

I fancy trying one this year but finding any info is difficult. The only ones I can find info on so far are:

    Mourne Sportive/Hilly 125
    Wicklow 200
    Kelloggs Tour of Ireland
The Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford

Links to websites or the organising club would be helpful also.

Once the season gets going, calendar on Irishcycling.com is pretty decent. After that, you're relying on word getting around.

Thanks - never thought of IrishCycling as I thought it would be all racing and not leisure so will check that one out. Not with a club and no real desire to join one so word of mouth probably means its unlikely I'll be trying any of those events. Pity there isn't a site for all this sort of thing. You would think they would want to publicise their events to get more interest in them.

Keep an eye out here. Posts usually go up a few weeks before any events.

That only lists CI sanctioned events. It's missing the Ring of Kerry, for example.

Great stuff there. That's some list. Looks like there's a lot of choice out there. From Co Down myself so looks like there is plenty my direction too. Will start looking through it all to see what catches my eye.

No time like now to start getting more miles in my legs and I'll definitely be out on at least on one of these this year. Been commuting for a few years now but have started to do a little weekend riding now and looking for a challenge now so I thought a sportive would be great. From what I hear they become a little addictive :D I fancy the Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford but it looks rather challenging, as I would expect from such a legend, so don't know if I would be up to it. I will see how the riding goes over the next few months to see what is achievable.

Ards CC run a relability trial late Jan/Early Feb keep an eye on the cycling ulster sire for details. Usually a good mix of harcore racers down to club level riders and a choice of distances as well.

How do sportives work? Do you have to be a member of a club to enter? Is there support on the ride or are you on your own if something goes wrong?

I'd be interested to try one, but really have no idea what's involved......

Can anyone give a brief explanation of how it all works?

    Club member: no
UCI License: sometimes, depends on the event, but you can get a one day one at the time of payment.
Support: mostly you are on your own. There can be limited support available but I wouldn't rely on it. It's best to be self sustainable.

Generally you don't need to be a member of a club to do a sportive. You might need to be a member of Cycling Ireland to do some of them but you can buy a CI license without being in a club (can even buy only a one day license).

In terms of support, this will vary from event to event. On the bigger ones (Ring of Kerry, Sean Kelly Tour) they will have multiple food stops and a good few support vehicles doing the rounds and even a broom wagon.

For some of the smaller ones, there might just be one car between all riders and that will act as a mobile food stop too. The only smaller one I was on last year was the Tour of Kildare and I found that once I lost the main bunch I was pretty much left on my own.

Thanks for that. Could you recommend any in particular, in the Leinster area, that might be good for a novice to try out?

Best one for a novice would be either the Wicklow 100 (or 200 if you feel like it) or the Ring Of Kerry. Now I am fully aware that Kerry is not in Leinster but I think it's well worth making the trip down to it.

Thanks for that and I'll probably aim to take part. Is there any particular reason though that that out of all the roads in Wicklow the route seems to deliberately follow the biggest nastiest and busiest dual-carriageway in the county? On the way back too there is much nicer route, parallel to the main Laragh-Roundwood-Enniskerry road (over by Lough Dan, Ballinastoe, Djouce.)

The Bray spins always seem to kick by heading down the N11 first. I quite like riding on it.

N11 can be a pain but the Road is very wide with a nice hard shoulder most of the way down. We normally use this road as it's the quickest way to get deeper into Wicklow on to nicer roads.

    Hi there
Yep -there is an answer, - a bit of a sentimental one. This Randonnee will be the Paddy Martin Memorial randonnee and the route was chosen as it was one of Paddy's favourite rides. The route you suggest is a fine one and we'd be happy to ride it you another day!
