just bought a laptop and brought it home, plugged it in to my LAN and its not going online, something to do with not being able to obtain the IP address??

im no expert so maybe someone could help??

I have the router in my room and my laptop works fine off it, ive just had a desktop working fine off the 2nd port which is the one im trying to connect the new laptop to so im thinking its the new laptop's network settings thats the prob??

    thanks!

When you plug the LAN cable into the laptop from the router, do any lights light up either right beside the port on the laptop or on the router? Should be green/amber combination with flickering when active. Could be a faulty cable. Could you be using a crossover cable instead of a patch cable?

You DO have the wireless card turned on by using slider switch and / or FN and some other button?
You can see your network in Windows Available Networks settings?
No problems with WEP/WPA password ?
Try changing router port by going into router settings usually by typing something like 192.168.1.1 in address bar?

What operating system is it? Which service provider are you using for broadband?
