BBC and ITV supply it , same as everywhere else in the world.

It cannot be 'deflected' ...easily .

Those in the eastern part of Donegal can pick it up easily , further west some complex aerials may be required

Freesat (a dish based system) is better unless you can pick up a strong BBC/ITV signal direct from N.I. via aerial. If so Tesco has actually Freeview receivers (or did have) on shelves even in Limerick, though they only work with UK signals.

Any retailer in Derry/Strabane/Enniskillen will have Freeview receivers.

Freesat also has more channels of Tv and Radio. It works anywhere in Ireland and most of European mainland coast :)

UHF aerial needed. Where are you in Donegal? As Sponge Bob says above, your location will determine what size/cost aerial you will need. Are you getting BBC/ITV etc. already via a TV aerial (analogue reception)? If from the Limavady transmitter, UHF analogue channel numbers are 55 (BBC1), 62 (BBC2), 59 (UTV) and 65 (Ch4).

Can you get signals from the Brougher Mountain mast in Donegal? If you can, UHF channel frequencies are 22 (BBC1), 28 (BBC2), 25 (ITV) and 32 (Ch4). If you are getting good reception directly from these masts you may get Freeview.

However as watty also says above, if you can put up a satellite dish, go for Freesat. Guaranteed to work if set up correctly. Definitely would need a signal meter to align a dish properly. Get an experienced installer in your area to do it if you don't want to do it yourself.

Which part of Donegal are you in? Many parts of Letterkenny can receive Freeview but you need one of those arrow-shaped ("digital") aerials, as the standard rectangular ones do not have enough gain to receive the signals from Northern Ireland. I know of at least two houses in different parts of the town that successfully receive it.

But as with the other replies, Freesat is probably the best way to go!

I don't think anyone can offer concrete advice until you tell us where you are. Generally for eastern Donegal on the Inishowen peninsula the Limavady transmitter will offer Freeview but certainly in my area most aerials are pointed at the Derry relay which while it provides Five analogue it does not provide Freeview.

Derry requires vertically polarised aerials, Limavady requires horizontally polarised aerials.

Strabane is another popular transmitter site in eastern Donegal, however like Derry it does not provide Freeview and won't until analogue switchoff in NI in 2012.

As Watty says, Freesat is the most reliable bet as this works anywhere in Ireland, regardless of location.

I have a Sony analogue/digital recorder (DVD/HDD/PVR) to record both Freeview and RTE analogue. It has a sensitive tuner and is an excellent buy with high speed fast forward/playback and 'pause' recording. It works off one aerial cable and is easy to set up. Don't think you can get it in Argos but Sony shops have them. ' Top up Tv' is Freeview plus a subscription card for a few extra UK DTT channels and in my opinion isn't worth it. Stick with freeview would be my advice.
