Digital broadcasting in Ireland

    Hi Guys

I live in the UK so not quite sure what's happening about digital broadcasting in Ireland. I've heard some reports that there is a planned rollout for '09, but I know no details.

My parents live in Wexford and as it's their wedding anniversary in March my sister and I thought it might be a nice idea to get them a new LCD TV as a present.

In the UK, most new sets come with a DTT receiver built-in along with the old analogue one. Presumably the UK Freeview receiver will not work in Ireland so we were wondering if (assuming the DTT rumours are correct) there are any signs that manufacturers will do a similar dual tuner inclusion for sets in Ireland. It would be great if they are, and available before March. Anyone got any views/news/definites?

    Thanks a mill

My tv is compatible for Irish DTT. It is the Sony KDL40W4000.

OK. Does that mean DTT is available in Ireland already, or just that your set is DTT-ready?

MPEg4 will be used in Ireland (as opposed to MPEG2 in the UK), so a lot of TVs sold in the UK would not be capable of picking up the Irish digital channels. This thread should point you in the right direction of TVs capable of receiving the MPEG4 broadcasts - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055420793

As to what is broadcast on that system - at the moment RTE 1, RTE 2, TV3 and TG4 are all that's available and that's only from certain transmitters. I'm sure someone here can tell you if anything can be picked up in Wexford.

A subscription service (Boxer) was originally due to begin a service in January 2009, but this has been pushed back to Autumn 09 at the earliest...

Meanwhile Satellite receiver gives all the UK channels for free, but most areas will need analogue aerial for Irish TV. Even if all goes to plan only about 80% population will have the 4 main Irish channels via Terrestrial Digital by the end of the year. Geographic coverage much less.
