    Hi all,
I am heading to New York at the end of the month and was wondering if anyone knows of any small venues, similar to Whelans.
anyone know of any bands worth seeing between 15th and 25th Jan?

Was in a place called the Living Room last time I was there: http://www.livingroomny.com/music.html. Smaller than the likes of Whelans but similiar kind of vibe.

Mercury Lounge is a great little venue, only holds about 200 people

Pollstar is a great website to check. You can specify a date range:

anyone ever successfully got returns at the box office on the day of a gig in new york? or gotten reasonable deals from scalpers outside the venue? 2 gigs i'm interested in going to are sold out - ida maria at union hall and department of eagles at the bowery ballroom, just wondering if it's worth my while heading along to the venue at all.

Check out North 6 in Brooklyn, although the name has since changed I believe but they get great bands there.

I'm going to be there at the same time.

Planning to see Frightened Rabbit in the Bowery Ballroom on 17th (although I think it's sold out now).
Max Tundra is supporting The Rosebuds there on the 16th.
Animal Collective are there on the 21st but again sold out.
Vic Chesnutt is there on the 23rd.

I've never been in the Bowery but from its listings it looks to have good acts. http://www.boweryballroom.com/

Damn i'm going in feb/march and was hoping to catch FR over there.

Bowery is the place to go to Jeff. I recommend just having a walk past the place anyway. It's too cool.

Vic Chestnut - awesome. I look good in leather.

We're on the guestlist for Frightened Rabbit so will definitely be in there to check out the Bowery, looking forward to seeing them live.

Plus we're renting an apartment just a few blocks away so might swing by on the night of Animal Collective and see if we can pick up tickets at the box office! Unfortunately I won't get to Vic Chestnut as I'm back on the 23rd. :(

just back from new york and got tickets at the door for both frightened rabbit and department of eagles, apparently they always hold a few at the door - only $15. only got there around 845 for frightened rabbit and got maybe the 5th last ticket, they seemed to still have a good few left for the eagles gig but i got there a lot earlier around 8 for that.
it's a great little venue, sound was excellent easy to get to the bar - there's one at the back both upstairs and down.

Yeah - I thought it was a great venue. Really enjoyed Frightened Rabbit - and think they went down really well. I'll definitely be checking out the Bowery next time I'm over.

Overhear this comment from a girl after they played 'Keep Yourself Warm' - "The music is great but there's so many F-words!"
