What happens to my Sky+ box after my subscription has been cancelled ? I know I can still receive the free channels, but do I still have the PVR functionality or does that just vanish ?

Yes it vanishes and also any old recordings will not play either :D

I thought that would be the case alright. Is there any way to flash it/wipe it/re-install it to regain the PVR bit ?

Since I got it for free I don't mind losing it too much really, but from an eco point of view it seems to be a bit of a waste to throw it out and buy another PVR to replace it for the free channels when the hardware is well up to the job.

I think Sky have a sub option, where you just pay for the PVR functions, to use on the FTA channels?

otherwise, I don't think anyone has been able to hack the boxes.

as others here have suggested though, maybe with the advent of Freesat, Sky may finally release the SKY+ boxes for personal use.

Yes, you can subscribe to just the PVR functions alone, but at €15 per month, it's hardly worth it.

That's €180 a year to record Free to Air on a box you own.

    That's why I won't get a Sky+ or SkyHD.
    Dunnes DVD recorder = €99

Humax FoxSat HD PVR (works ordinary Tv too) £292, about €300. No recording charge.
