I'm sure this type of question may have been asked before, but I can't find it at the moment, so apologies in advance for asking this stuff over again.

Is the sat4free branding just a handy way to package and sell the dish installation and the free channels beamed down from 28.x or is there more to it ? If I plug my Lidl Silvercrest receiver into my Sky dish am I effectively getting sat4free service ?

You'd be right. Sat4Free is in essence, a Irish marketed version of Freesat (though not marketed by BBC or ITV, who do market Freesat.)

You can get all of Freesat's or Sat4Free's standard definition TV channels on a Lidl/Silvercrest, or indeed any, FTA receiver.

Only if you buy a Sat4Free HD box.

Sat4Free also has 7-day EPG though, and digital text from BBC etc, which are generally* not available on FTA boxes.

    * a few FTA manufacturers have the 7day EPG working, a FortecStar model I think being one.

Also I think Sat4Free auto tunes. The Generic & Lidl type boxes can easily be missing free channels, which has to be manually fixed.

It's only a FW updated via PC on a specific Fortec Star that has EPG.

The EPG is of most value on a PVR. (built in Hard Disk Recording).

The Pace DS810XE FTA Receiver has one but TBH its rubbish.

Correct, it automatically retunes when a transponder change occurs by using the Freesat data channel. Plain FTA boxes sometimes "lose" channels and need to be retuned manually.

Plus the Lidl box is a total pain to use if you are techno unsavvy, An aunt of mine got in installed (she's the type that can't even send a text message) and I often get phone calls asking how to change TV channels. So for ease of use I'd go with the SAT4FREE or FREESAT boxes plus all the other built in goodies, however if you intend to try receive other satellites such as 13 or 19 degrees east you would be better off with a dedicated FTA such as the Lidl one or a different brand of which there are loads. What Satellite magazine is pretty good or look it up online http://blog.wotsat.com/
