Best Cabin Baggage

    Hi,

I fly Ryanair reasonably often, and sometimes need to take some of my stuff on as hand luggage (nothing prohibited, just clothes and the like).

Their stated hand luggage restrictions are 10kg weight, and 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a bag which is near to those dimensions. I'm not too worried about the cost - I'd like something that's not too uncomfortable to carry, and don't mind paying a bit extra for that comfort.

I'd appreciate any pointers - the last bag I bought for it was just a tiny bit too big when full.

As far as I can see anything goes in the cabin these days. People who check in online and never go to the check in desk stroll onto the plane with pretty much any bag they like these days. It's normally not an issue in Ireland. In the UK airports the security may ask you to try to fit your bag in the gauge if it looks oversize.

To answer your question it's not hard to find a 55cm x 40cm x 20cm bag. Just find one that is light weight when empty so that you are not using up a lot of your allowance with the bag on its own. A sports bag is the obvoius choice for lightness.

It does seem like a bit of a free for all at the moment, but I've got a sneaky suspicion that as more and more people try to get away with only cabin luggage, and the bags get bigger, they will start becoming very precious about what they will and won't allow. So I'd rather just get a bag that complies now, so I don't have to worry. I fly a lot compared to most people, and don't often have a lot of pre-flight shopping time, so if I can buy a good bag now that will last for a while I'd be very happy.

I will try to just go out this weekend to a few bag shops and check sizes, and if I don't get any recommendations, I'll just buy something that I think fits the bill. I just wondered if there was a specific brand, shop, or model of bag that anyone out there had found really great, so I could direct my search :)

I do have a small Delsey case that I bought a few years ago that is cabin size with wheels and weighs next to nothing when empty. It expands too which is handy. Other than that the usual Samsonites, Tumis etc if money is no object.

do you take a laptop at all? if so, it may be worth looking at something with a laptop pocket that is easy to get to.

I use a Jansport driver rucksack/trolleycase/laptop case which has become a trusty friend over the last few months, but not much use if you are looking to take a lot of clothes.

I also recently bought a suitcase (Samsonite i think) in House of Fraser which is the maximum size for carry on and is also very light. It does not expand, but it is surprising how much you can fit into it. HoF have an excellent range if you are not worried about price.

I have a Rimowa cablin trolley which fits within the IATA cabin-baggage dimensions and only weighs around 2.2 kg when empty.

I flew with Ryanair last week. They now seem to have baggage police at the boarding gates. They were doing Random Bag Tests and a number of people had their bags taken off them. I am not sure what happens then... wether they are denied boarding or how Ryanair extracts the money out of them. In fairness, on both flights almost everyone had hand baggage that appeared to be compliant.

There are plenty of bag shops that will give a bag that will fit. Failing that bring a measuring tape!

One thing that is confusing. Ryanair state that it's one bag only and that any airport purchases must go in this one bag. In Pisa airport they were making announcements that it was one bag only but excluded airport purchases. Obviously airports are getting annoyed that the one bag policy is hitting their retail sales.

Ye looks like FR are cracking down on carry on.
My friend was coming back from Madrid Yesterday, they were checking most bags, anyone with large bags were charged extra and bag taken from them to be put below.

In fairness people have been taking the p*ss. Nothing stopping someone loading with purchases made at the departure lounge after check in or not disclosing an additional bag at check in. I have seen people boarding with up to three bags including large laptop cases that could hold more than just a laptop.

I paid e160 for a Samsonite roller bag that fits exactly into the Ryanair template sounds expensive but I can depend on it and know it will do me for years.

I have no doubt that people are bending the rules but it looks like those days are over. The probably wanted to get people into the habit of carry on luggage and then reduce it down to a matchbox. The usual Ryanair technique - the give you something and then gradually reduce it.

The bag we ended up travelling with was one I already had. When stuffed full, it's just a bit bigger than requirements. However, I did notice people doing random bag checks at the airport this time around, so it seems I was right in guessing that they're going to become a lot more strict about these things.

I have a laptop and occasionally travel with it. I've got a laptop bag for it. Whenever this is the case, I usually put any excess hand luggage in the bag of whoever I'm travelling with (since I'm usually bringing the laptop for all of us to use, not just me).

I'll look into some of the bags mentioned above, and see if I can find anything that will suit. Thanks for the help.

I've used a Samsonite wheeled extendable handle type thing for years, its the same as you see most crew dragging behind them (...why I bought it ;)) fits the bin fine & packs enough for a few days if your case goes AWOL.

As for carry on restrictions... would never work in Africa :D

Ryanair, today (20th Jan) confirmed that there will be no exceptions to its passenger Cabin Baggage Allowance in response to the growing number of passengers carrying more than one piece of hand baggage and after one passenger attempted to carry FIVE items of hand luggage onboard an aircraft.

Ryanair’s cabin baggage allowance of 10kg per passenger, is restricted to one bag into which passengers must place all handbags, laptops etc. This policy is enforced across the network, to ensure fairness to all passengers.

Ryanair passengers who do not comply and present with more than one piece of hand luggage will be charged €/£30 at the departure gate and have their bag placed in the aircraft’s hold

I used to love it when my bag was small, but packed full of all the heaviest things i had with me. Now they've started weighing my bag too.

That said, i seen a guy with a stuffed gearbag coming on to the plane. I think thats where ripping the piss hits a whole new level. He managed to fit it into one of the overhead lockers and nobody else could put their bags up then.

That is why peple rush to get on ryanair flights, not because they want a good seat, its so they can get their bag inthe lockers. Carry on bags are supposed to fit under the seat in front, 90% it appears do not do that so you end up with people putting ther bag anywhere they can.

This should make boarding a lot easier.

That, or the rush is everybody hoping for an emergency exit seat, or an seat with elbow room. I hate it when i see tiny little women jump into the emergency seats. Ah well.

I'd say most carry ons i see fit underneath the seat in front, just that once a bag goes there, where are your feet?

    Can't recommend this enough.

Even though it's a 40 liter capacity, straps on the inside and out ensure you get everything down to half that with comfort. Shoulder strap (detachable), handle at the top as well as back straps which hide away in the back panel.

Plenty of space for a bloke for 2/3 nights away.

hi everyone - just noticed today that ryanair have recently allowed a free second cabin bag to be brought on. they give the dimensions but they dont give the maximum weight that can be carried in that second bag !! Anyone know what that weight allowance for the second carry on bag is please?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 260 ✭✭Franticfrank

Even though it's a five year old thread, it's good to hear. I flew with Easyjet last week and they were still forcing women to put their handbags into their regular carry-on bags. Everyone just unpacked them on the plane later anyway...made little sense and wasted everyone's time.

I don't know the weight but very light its not that you are allowed a second trolley bag it basically means you are allowed a handbag if you are a woman or you are allowed a shopping bag if you were shopping in the terminal that's all

You should be allowed your hand bag on easy jet! But ya they have a different policy re: cabin bags it depends on how many bags in the hold and how full the lockers get before they will start gate checking bags!
