check the speed of CPU

Stupid question but what the heck...

I have Advent 4211c. It has a Fn+F10 option where I can reduce CPU speed etc I believe to conserve battery. Nothing pops up the screen or anything when I do it though - so how do I know if it's in power save / battery saving mode or not?

    Thanks

Have you tried cpu z? It's free to download.

A says the spec of the laptop.
Does B give a live reading of what the CPU is currently clocked at?

I've tried triggering the Fn+F10 button and not noticed any change in B even when I close the app and reopen it.

Do you have it plugged in when you're doing the tests? I'm pretty sure the fn+f10 feature only comes into effect when you're running on batteries. When you press it a green battery icon normally pops up, similar to the wi-fi one etc.

Plugged the power cable out and tried it just now. Odd how I've only tried it while running on mains. I do get an icon on the screen!

How is it that my CPU is only reading as running at 800Mhz in the screenshot above though when power plugged in?

Mine shows up as 800Mhz as well. If I stress the cpu a bit though the multiplier jumps to 12 and it shows up as 1600Mhz. It seems the cpu underclocks itself when it's not being stressed. You should be able to turn this off in the bios I imagine.

edit: a bit of googling confirms it's speedstep kicking in and dropping the multiplier. Disable speedstep in the bios and it will sort it.

Well you're just full of answers aren't ya!

I'll see if I can stress the CPU and see if it changes.

Thanks for the thoughts lads !

An anti-virus scan should stress it enough. Just to let you know if you use the latest msi bios it will let you overclock the cpu to 2Ghz. It might affect battery life a little.
