Choppy video playback on laptop

I'm using media player classic to play avi files and the playback is annoyingly choppy .

It's only been an issue recently in the last week or so but i've not installed anything or added anything

I ran a defrag ( with defraggler cuz vista one is rubbish) and turned off commodo and avg but its still choppy with all digital files and dvd's

I reinstalled my codecs and reregistered them in cccp too and task manager is normal for video playback only at 30-50% cpu usage.

Help before i throw it out the window in a girley hissy fit

Are the drivers for the graphics card installed? Even if they are I'd try and re-install them anyways.

Did it ever play the files properly since you got it.

I would agree with both your own suggestion to reinstall the codecs, and the suggestion below to reinstall/update the drivers for the graphics card. I would also look at Task Manager to see if there is anything else that is running (such as spyware/anti virus scan etc etc) that is using up the resources. For example, when you are not running Media Player, how much processor time is being used?

could also be a heat issue,

make sure you laptop is getting enought air circulation,

i have a sony vaio that has the exact same problem with choppy playback...all to do with the computer being too hot

Hmmmm as i said i changed nothing, but that would make sense as the laptop has been on nearly all days over xmas.

I have it sitting on one of those cooler thingys aldi had a while ago which seems to be doing a decent job or so i thought

And the video i was trying to watch plays fine now as ive only just switched it on

had a similar problem recently, turned out a lot of dust was restricting the fan. A quick clean out and was back to normal.

Go to the battery icon in the tray, make sure its on High Performance, power saver can cause chopiness.

Media player Classic uses Ati gfx cards for rendering 2d images. If you have one, the first port of call would be there to start with as above.

Try the following settings in Media player Classic

    -VMR9 (renderless)
    -all others to DX9
    -Use texture.....3D -->bicubic a= -1.00
    -VMR9 mixer mode

And turn off AA and AF in basic Windows desktop as well.

sounds like a codec problem , Vlc uses its own built in codecs , while MPC uses codecs on the system , how does windows media player fair with the files?

my older laptop this happened. Turned out that the performance settings were set to "max battery". This dropped the performance of the laptop so much that it made video choppy.
