PADI Question

    Quick one.

I started my AOWD late last year, and completed the Nav and Bouyancy adventure dives for it. Due to the weather, I haven't yet completed it.

I'm going to the Red Sea in February, and was thinking of doing a Specialty. Question is, am I allowed to do the Wreck, or Deep Specialties? These require you to be an Adventure Diver, where as the others only require an OWD.

My understanding of what the Adventure Diver certifications is just complete one of the adventure dives. I'm not sure if you need to get certified as one, or not, hence the confusion.

So, I've 2 Adventure dives in my Log book, so what do you think my chances are?

    Cheers

Ive been to the red sea three times and dived with a good few centres. In my opinion once you`re paying and reasonably competent they wont really care.

    this is true.
but to do deep wouldnt be recommeded as you havent done a deep dive yet
    .....officially!

if you get your paperwork you could complete your aow over there as a referal

I could be wrong ....... (but highly unlikely!! ha ha)
but an adventure diver is one who has completed at least 3 of the dives toward an Advanced Certification.

I think the best solution is get a referral, a form filled out by the centre that you originally started your AOW with.

Bring it to the centre that you wish to do the wreck and Deep specialities to.

Do your navigation dive, then do a wreck dive (as an adventure dive) then do a deep dive (as an adventure dive) to complete the advanced OW certification. It does however mean that you need to do an extra dive, the navigation dive but this is a requirement anyway to get the AOW certification.

you can then use the previous two dives (wreck and Deep) as contributing toward your Speciality certifications.

    hi,
i did my OWD in 2004. haven't dived since. going to red sea next week :D can i do my AOW, or is it too long since OWD? is it more likely i'll be doing random dives instead? don't really mind tbh- just looking forward to some dives.

You can do your AOW but you will need to do a scuba review first so you should factor that into your time plans for your dives

yeah do a scuba review first ,will help you get comfortable in the water again.
remember you have to do knowledge reviews and classroom work.so maybe if with non diving mates might take up to much time,
    either way enjoy!!

    Hi,

If you are doin "Random Dives" you should have to do a review if you haven't dived in the last 6 months. It doesn't really matter when you have done your course. It is when you last dived.

As part of an Advanced OW course, Instructors are supposed to assess students capabilities prior to undertaking any of the dives, usually by a review. However this is not always put into practice.

I would recommend doin the advanced course and ask to do a review first. At least this way you will be under the guidance of an instructor/ DM for your first dive back.

Then do your advanced. You are better off commiting to a course because it will definitely provide an incentive to keep diving over a number of days while on holidays and this is the best way to learn. Divers completing the OW are beginners at best. You have experienced the very basic skills that are required to dive. the Advanced allows you to hone those skills and it is a far more rewarding course than the OW in my book.

A refresher course would be advised in this situation. 4 years is a long time and things get forgotten. There is usually refreshers available in Ireland (as many people are in your position) Or you may be able to do the refresher in the Red Sea. Best of luck with it
