    Hey all!

    Happy New Year!!

We have a 10 month old Samoyed and we think she has just come into her first heat.

We noticed little droplets of blood around the floor yesterday. She hasn't really changed in her behaviour over the past while.. she still seems happy and full of life!

Although, possibly she is taking more naps, and she is a little off her food (But then again she has always been an extremely picky eater, we're finding it hard to find a brand of dog food that she likes before turning her nose up at again, but that's another story!)

I've done a bit of Googling, and it would appear that it is normal for a bitch to have spotting, and bleeding, like a period, is this correct?

Poor little thing... wish she could talk and tell us how she feels, hope she's not getting cramps etc.. with it.

We'll be looking in the next few days to get her neutered.

Is this a big procedure? Is it done under general anaesthesia? Will she require stitches? Need to be shaved etc..?

How long would the stay in the Vets be afterwards, one night, more?

How best can we look after her to make her comfortable when it's done? We want to make sure she is in no/the least amount of pain possible.

Anything we should look out for afterwards?

Sorry, it's our first time so this is all new to us..!

Hi, yeah, it sounds as though she's in season. This will go on for about 3 weeks, when the bleeding stops, thats the time that she's going to want to get with a dog, and that is the time that you really have to make sure that she doesn't. Dogs and bitches can be very persistent and determined, so you will have to keep her in, if you do take her out, only walk her on a lead in quiet areas etc. Most owners with bitches in season tend to walk very early in the morning, or late at night.

Once she's finished her season, you should get her spayed 3 months later. Its a fairly routine operation, performed under general anaesthetic and she should recover very quickly. The vets don't usually keep a dog in overnight after a spaying or neutering. She will have stitches, which will need to be removed 10 days after the op, and she should be kept quiet, with just on lead walks while she has the stitches in. I've always found the hardest part is keeping the bitch from running around and playing with the stitches in.:D

"Yes its done under general anassthesia and yes to stitches, she will be shaved only where the cut is to go near the groin. It should be done 3 months after her season

How long would the stay in the Vets be afterwards, one night, more? My bitch was done on one day and did not need a overstay went to the vets at 9.30 and was picked up at 5.30 tail wagging but a bit dopey.

How best can we look after her to make her comfortable when it's done? We want to make sure she is in no/the least amount of pain possible.

Main thing is don't let her run or take excercise for the few days your vet will advise you. (It was hard with our hyper lab to keep her calm all she wanted to do was run around the garden as if nothing was wrong needless to say she had to be on a lead to prevent her from running aroun

Anything we should look out for afterwards? ask the vet

    Hi Golden and ISDW! :)

Thanks so much for replying, very helpful, I feel much more at ease now!

We'll definitely be keeping a close eye on her and not letting any other dogs near her in the meantime, I didn't realise that we should 3 months before getting her neutered after her first heat, so that's good to know!

Poor lil tyke is all curled up beside now fast asleep, bless! :o

Thanks again for the info! xx
