Always the same. When I finished college back in 1997, I faced the same dilemma.

I was the same myself, done a course with FAS about four years ago and to this day have not got a job related to it because of no previous experience, what was the point of the course then
I'd never go do another course with them, complete waste of time and money.

`Do FAS courses not include work experience in the industry? I've often though most of FAS was a massive waste of taxpayer's money and if that's the case then I was right..

Yes and no. If you go out, and get work experience, FAS will help pay for it. Many people expect FAS to find them work experience, which is unrealistic. Did a cert through FAS which got I then got work experience for, but wasn't kept on. The cert did however open doors when I applied to companies that had turned me down before, when I didn't have the cert.

It's very limited. We had a few people doing FAS courses in with us for work experience but it was only for a month or so. Not exactly enough to get you top of the CV pile when you're up against other people.

It's not just limited to FAS though. Experience often counts for a lot more than a degree in many industries, and rightly so tbh.

Yea, I don't think you can really blame FAS for her not getting a job. I finished college with 30 or so other people and only one is working in a related job because in our industry experience is everything.

patience is the key, it took some people I know 10 years to get the job they wanted after getting their degree. In some cases, they even moved out of their home country to get what they wanted.

    Thanks the_syco.

You're gonna struggle in that industry at the moment regardless of experience.

The only way she'll probably find anything is by going to salons and offering to work minimum wage, or a certain amount of hours unpaid.

She could also be a bit entrepreneurial and try to make money from her course without having a full-time employer.

For example, she could print up one thousand flyers and deliver them to the houses around her estate offering a call out beauty service. If it is priced correctly she will get some business out of it.

If I was interviewing someone and I saw that on their CV, I would be impressed.

This is the way to go but it will be really tough as there is a lot of people out there doing it you need be creative and start doing something they're not.

8 weeks in company is a month and a half. Best bet is to work your ass off for those 8 weeks, and see can you come back when you finish the traineeship. They'll probably tell you to f**k off, though, as it sounds like they're getting 8 weeks free labour (8 weeks paid by FAS).

Get a grip, doing a course isn't a magic ticket to getting a job. Same with any course, FAS of not. People have had it too easy, over the past few years, they expect to walk into a job with little or no effort.

Most people start courses without doing any research into what employment opportunities there are at the end of it. You should do that before starting a course. Most people simply choose what they would like to do. Its just not that simple.
